A Political Lecture by a Pious Wife. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 29 January 1861

A Political Lecture by a Pious Wife. The following we find in the Buffalo Republic, and as there are Wide Awakes in California old cnuugh to have wives, perhaps they may read the lecture with profit : [tStoni —In t*ed, fare to the wall—strong smell of coal i-il—time, three in the morning ] A pretty time, indeed, for you to come home, sir! Where l.ave you been all night ? You smell as if you had been in search of Symines' Hole through a tarbarrel. Talk of sulphuretted hydrogen, or superannuated eggs! They aint anywhere. Say, where have you been r Here I've been lying awake for the last five hours, waiting for you to come. Now I want to know where you have been all this time ?— Wisli 1 wouldn't bother you—tell me in the morning? I want to know now; it's near enough morning to know where one's husband has been all night, and particularly if he comes home perfumed clear through as you are. You mustn't good wife me.— That won't answer. Suppose you were a woman, and your husb.ind should g...

Was the Tulare Valley ever an Inland Sea ? [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 29 January 1861

Was the Tulare Valley ever an Inland Sea ? j An intelligent correspondent of the Stockton Jour--1 no/, writing from Sao Luis Gonzago, says : j Most of geologists reason that the Tulare Plains, ; were, at some past period, an inland sea. In connec- | tion with this theory, I will refer to one fact not i heretofore published. It is that of the invisible remains of a large river once passing through the Coast Range a little south of the Mission of Soladad. I have been shown a true copy of a rude man execu • ted by Juan Bautista Anzr, A. P., 1774, of the Tulare Valley and adjacent sea-coast range of mountains. : The original of this map was in the archives of Mon- ; terey, and was executed by the early missionary ex plorers ;it is dedicated to Father Palou There are, in this map, but three Passes laid down, viz: San i Fernando, San Miguel and Santa Acna (called by the Indians Notonoto.) [A copy of this map is said to be in the possession of United States Commissioner Bartlett, of the Me...

Night. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 29 January 1861

Night. BT HARRY CORN WILL. Tls night—'tis night—the hour of hours, When love lies down with folded wings By Psyche in her starless bowers, And down his fatal arrow flings; Those bowers where not a sound is heard, Save only from the bridal bird. Who 'mid that utter darkuess, sings Sweet music like the running springs; This her burthen, soft and clear, 44 Ix>ve is here ! Love is here ! M 'Tis night! the moon is on the stream. Bright spells are on the smoothed sea, And Hope, the child, is gone to dream Of pleasure which may never be! And now is haggard care asleep, And now doth the widow's sorrow smile; And slaves are hushed in slumber deep, Forgetting grief and toil awhile. What sight can fiery morning show To shame the stars or pale moonlight? What beauty can the day bestow Like th 't which falls with gentle night? Sweet lady, sing I not aright? O, turn and tell me, for the day Is faint and fading far away: And now comes back the hour of hours. When Love his lovelier mistr...

That Bed-Bug Story. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 29 January 1861

That Bed-Bug Story. A good thing never dies. Some eight years ago, friend Turner, of the Grand Rapids Eagle, had occa sion to stop at the old Kalamazoo House; and owing to some misunderstanding with the landlord, failed to have the requisite kl chalk" administered, as doth seem fit for the editor of a "widely circulated journal. " Not being maliciously disposed, however, lie 1 gave the hotel and its inhabitants the following first rate notice: i u You see I went to bed pretty all fired used up, after a hull day on the old road before the plank was laid, kalkilatin' on a good snoose. Waal, just as the shivers began to ease off, I kinder felt suthin' trying to pull off my shirt, and diggin' their teeth into the small of my back to get a good hold. Wriggled and twisted and puckered—all no use—kept a goiu' it like all sin. I "Bime by got up and struck a light to look round a spell—found about a peck of bed bugs scattered round, aud more droppin' off my shirt and running down my legs eve...
