MONDAY M ORNING, DECEMBER 17, 1849 Pollil.nl unit S«H*l Pro^r^.lOM. We can readily imagine how rise is given to the multitude and variety of falso conceptions and erroneous opinions which prevail in the states respecting California when we reflect upon tho singularity, nay misfortuno of her present social condition. I»ri»a»f Lodging*. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 17 December 1849

I»ri»a»f Lodging*. This term exists but in the name in this country, fur such a thing is absolutely not known, for single gentlemen most particularly. Scarcely an occupant of a furnihsed apartment in the city that does not have a very large circle of friends who frequently drop in upon him and effect a odgment for a night or bo, perfectly willing to put up for a night with an ordinary lodging— boarding in such cases being always included.— However anxious a man may be to cultivate an extensive acquaintance he is not always exactly axious to be imbedded in friendship. And "offerings" of that character are not always exactly acceptable in crowded places, particularly when one is afflicted with a little rheumatism. Many an unhappy lessee of a room has caught the rheumatism by giving up his bed to some "friend of his heart,' and taking himself a shake down on the floor. He might then well sing "O give me a cot in the valley I love." or think of any change for a comforter. The miseries o...

Cittf Corporation.— The Into Legislative Assembly revived the act of the provisional government granting corporation rights to Oregon city. Why is there no motion made for an election of officers, and earning the charter into effect? It would surely contribute much to the security, prosperity, and improvement of the city. There are many evils which can bo corrected in no other way. For instance, nothing short of ari nc ti»e and vigilant police can prevent so much horse-racing along our streets. If this practico is not soon arrested, the life of mine person will be the forfeit. And there is not a >übbath that our worshiping assemblies are not grievously annoyed by the clattering of horses hoofs along th« streets. Wo hopo the cha...

LOCAL MATTERS [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 17 December 1849

LOCAL MATTERS. Murder at the Bella Union. We regret to announce the. perpetration of this crime, on Friday evening. At the Bella Union House, on Portsmouth square. The affair occurred about 4 o'clock in the morning, after our tri-weekly paper had gone to press. The name of the deceased was Arthur C.W. Reynolds, of Philadelphia, a painter by trade, and the person who committed the deed, was Mr Reuben Withers, of New York, who has been engaged in mercantile transactions in this city. WEDNESDAY MORNING, DEC. 19, 1849 m m... » <;»ifi." F^)m tti« memorable discovery of gold in the mountains of the American River, t'ppcr California, to the present moment, there have been more remarkable instances of turning up a "shin* ing substance," in every part of the United States, from Maine to Georgia, than the newspapert can well inform themselves concerning. While about one-half of the California gold stories were gravely declared digestible, no editor scrupled to swallow a/I pertaining to the discovery of gold somewhere in the Cumberland Mountains, or away down cast, or perhaps in the far-west ; but always, it would seem, located in a vicinity plowed over for half a century or more. Even to this day, the " California gold humbug beads many scathing, sweeping editorial leaders, followed by the plausible announcement of •' more gold " on the borders of Arkansas, or in Texas, may be. If this be not " straining at a gnat and swallowing a camel,' perhaps someone will...

Oysters. Could we but once again sit down to a fine dish of fresh, fat "Shrewsbury" oysters, "blue pointers," "Mill pond," "Barrataria," or "Cat Islanders," we should be willing to repent of all our sins and "sink down into the silent tomb with a gleam of satisfaction bordering on joy" as Mr. Toots would say. But oyetern are denied us except in cans, hermetrically sealed, which is what we cannot relish We have no compunctions of conscience in devouring an oyster in the shell, and cannot perceive the barbarity of either breaking the shell or insinuating a knife into the innermost recesses of the bivale's apartment. We have such an affection for this excellent article of consumption that we could never read any other poet than Shelley with any degree of satisfaction. The editor of tho N. Y. Evening Post speaks of a modern Parisian invention which has superseded the old way of rapping the shell of an oyster, forcing a knife into the body of the unfortunate animal and fetching him to li...
