No subject can be of greater interest than an inquiry into our system ot pu- nal laws. Tbe reputation enjoyed by the re- viewer, and bis position as one of the District Judges of the State, entitle his opinion to great weight. The author of the review proposes a search- ing criticism of the panal cone, and oannot fail to deteot many obnoxious provisions. The ~ Commissioner* who reported this code to tbe legislature expressed great diffldeuce as to Its merits; aud were candid in admitting its imper- perlections. We may bope, for tbe crudit of the Legislature wbicb adopted the new codc, that It will not be found so utterly worthless and mischievous as tbe reviewer seems to ap- prehend. SfltttfttfR Intelligtnm. AUSTIN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9,1857 Why Turin a new Party? As wo foretold, the k. n. press gener- ally, and the par excellence independent presses particularly, see a great necessi- ty for a new Southern Party. I his is the old trick of 1854, a little more pub- licly conducted. It is an impotent ef- fort to commit uustcady politicians (and their name is legion) against the admin- istration without a why or a wherefore, and then to keep them so committed ev- er afterwards. While this íb being done some of the venal collar presses arc at their old trick of merely looking on, or at midnight peeping in aud then waiting to see how the land lies. The Syren song is to del^ie Southern men into the belief that all men of the North are unreliablo upon the slavery question ; aud therefore good and true democrats should join an intqnso south- ern fighting, fire-eating, disunion party. But have the northern rleaiocracy proved themselves so unsound that we are ¿o reject t...
