oped Pag 2Thc BrandFriday May 3 1985 Well I'll have to admit something. I've waited all year long for this Issue of the Brand. No not that Friday May 3 has any special significance to It or that this Issue of the Brand Is In any way unique. . . (other than the fact that this Is our LAST paper of the year)! Yes the time has come. The time to put out the paper which has been confined to my dreams until now that all illusive last issue It's over This is it. We're through . Gosh that sounds good! Hey don't get me wrong. I've thoroughly enjoyed my Job. But as It says In the Bible in Ecclesiastes chapter 3 "There Is a right time for everything" and this is exactly the right time to bring to a close a very memorable year as editor of the Brand of Hardin-Simmons University. If I had it to do over again would I be still choose to be the editor? Yes pro- bably but if I had it to do over again I would still be quoting Ecclesiastes at this time of the year final issue time. Monday Sept.301985The BrandPflae 2 Letter from the editor When I accepted the offer to be editor of the school paper I had all types of high ideals for our paper to reach some great jour- nalistic plateau. I still have those ideals. Except now I realize they cannot be achieved in one giant swoop of an Exacto knife. Time is everything and in newspapers time is always neartng a deadline. You have to realize that you will not be able to cover everything this week and next week those same stories will be old news. I hope everyone as readers will keep in mind that The Brand is simply another extracurricular activity for the staff although it usually turns into some kind of Holy Grail for us to finish. I wish to apologize to every school newspaper person I have ever even had a bad thought about when I read their paper especially now that I have stumbled a few yards in their shoes. I also want to thank all the people that have offered their support during the first few weeks of the paper. ...

f f Neutral Corner: Frank Rose September of 1985 will go down at one of the more memorable In sports history. Two records finally came to an end this past month. Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb's all-time hit record and Michael Splnks ended the undefeated record of Larry Holmes. People always remember where they were or what they were do- ing when history takes place. I'll never forget when I heard the news that Pete Rose had collected his 4192nd career hit. I was driving down Hickory Street on my way home. As always I had the radio on. In bet- ween songs the announcer an- nounced that the historic hit had been made. At that moment I got an incredible serge of energy. I've gotten chills up and down my spine before but never quite like that. When I got home I found out that the hit had been shown on T.V. I couldn't wait to see the replay on the news. I watched the sports news of KTXS.KRBC and KTAB. At 10:30 p.m. I watched CNN and ESPN. Each time I sw Pete take Eric Show's 2-1 pitch in- to le...

MondayOct.l4The BrandPage 2 r in i Letter from the editor ZM Apathy is a very strong and persuasive force. Especially when a person faces a quickly accelerating snowball of assignments and responsibilities. Any person who has burned the midnight oil trying to complete a task (I think that Includes all of us) knows the sudden urge of the brain to take a quick Jaunt to the Bahamas where you hope they do not have alarm clocks or overdue homework. But fortunately or unfortunately we do live in reality where we must account for what we do or do not do. The newspaper can be a pretty intimidating snowball when the end of the week nears and most of the pages have gaping holes of white on them. That is when that apathy begins its fight for control of your body and offers it an infinite number of options to working on the darned paper which will soon be nothing more than scrap paper to most people. As I have said before and will most likely say until I edit my final paper we are still very mu...
