(to the editor " western champion.") Sir,—Just a few words in reply to Mr. < McGea, of the 7$). I am more than satis fied that he is making it a personal matter against me, and be fat's to reoly to my chal lenge byjmaking umvarrant. i, cowardly, and -base insinuations, wlr.ch I feel sure it is un necessary for me to deny, as my pt qt con duct during my car 3r in Parkes I think •will be sufficient answer to hr's wild ravings. (from our own correspondent.) The weather is extre.aely hot, and the country hereabouts is in a very bad state ; grass and water are faot disappearing. The creek 13 dry with i the exception of a few water holes*, though they say there ib a nice stream running up Kamandra way. On Friday evening the "Rev F. G. Neild R.D. delivered a moat interest ing and instructive lecture on t( General Gordon" in the, church in aid'of the organ, which ia to be re paired or replaced by a new one, for the old one is just about worn out. At the close of the lecture Mr. Neild thanked those present, for there at tendance, but said be was soiry that that there were not still more present, especially the men, for they made themselves very conspicuous by their abseuce, there only being one man present, the worthy chairman, Mr. Loader, But someone asks how could the young men be expected to attend a lecture in aid of the church, and pey one shilling admission, when they could get a dance the very same night,...

Notes and Comments [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 14 January 1898

[By " Noogoora."] Some months ago, in these columns, I stated that signs and tokens ob servable in the political firmament induced the opinion that the general election would take place about June next. And now it haa com© to pass that the Ministerial map date-—Prime Ministeria' mandate, in fact—has gone forth that the election will take place during the month mentioned. Although it is a fairly long cry from this to midwinter, a considerable amount of activity is noticeable in the various political camps. Candidates are coming forward to sootfte the ear of the all-too-guUible elector, with ear tickling panaceaB for all political and social ills; enthusiastic groups of electors are commencing to wax eloquent and wrath in turn at street corners, in discussing; politics in general ; while Ministers and the smaller fry of parliamentary henda are manifesting an unusual degree of interest in welfare of their several strongholds*. Locally, Mr. H. J. Fletcher, a " colt" so to speak has fire...

KLONDYKE. (TO THE EDITOR "WESTERN CHAMPION.") [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 14 January 1898

(TO THE EDITOR " WESTERN CHAMPION.") Sir,—As an Australasian mining man of eighteen years' standing, a member of the A.M.A., just returned from the Chilcoot Pass, I desire to point out to fellow workers the follow ing facts :—The reported finds in the Yukon basin are correct. To get there the cheapest, quickest, and best route is by the Canadian-Australian line from Sydney to Vancouver, British Columbia, thence per boat to Shagway Bay, and thence over the Chilcoot Pass. There are men in Australia who are advertising San Francisco. Seattle, and Victoria (B.C.), to whom do not listen ; also turn away from any person or company who try to get you to go to Juneau or Skagway Bay, These places are in the United States where one has to pay double for his outfit and from 30 per cent to 35 per cent additional is added as duty, directly yon step into Canada. Ihe-gold fields are in Cauaaa and a great mistake is made if you land elsewhere. You should have at least £75 to get to Dawson from Sydn...

Political Campaign. MR. FLETCHER'S ADDRESS. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 14 January 1898

MR. FLETCHER'S ADDRESS. On Saturday evening Mr. H. J. Fletcher, of Mmgelo,- opened the political campaign in Ashburnhom, by delivering an address from Toobey's Hotel balcony. Mr. Johri Medlyn, m the absence of'the Mayor, took the chaise and in a suitable speech intro duced Mr. Fletcher. About 150 electors were present, and the speaker was accorded an attentive hearing. Mr, Fletcher, after expressing his gratefulness to Mr. Merilvn for pre siding, said as a genera! election was comparatively near at hand many of them before casting an intelligent vote would like to hear what each candidate had to say, and in their cool moments they could select him whom they deemed most suitable to represent them. He would be a candidate for Ashbiirnham next election, and it was only fair that the electors should know the political principles he espoused. True, the election was hardly likely to take place before June, but it frequently happened that during the heat and turmoil of an electioneering ca...

M U D G E E. As showing the benefit? of co-oper ation anions producers, the directors eighth annual report of the Mudgee Dairy Co,, read at a meeting last week, stated that during the twelve months 543,227 gallons of milk were received at the factory, or 1500 gallons daily. From this 224,5081b of butter were made. The total amount paid for milk during the year wa8 <£7,467 17s 2d. The dividend to be paid to shareholpers is 8 per cent. EARLY-CLOSING MOVEMENT. (TO THE EDITOR "WESTERN CHAMPION,") [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 14 January 1898

(to the editor " western champion,") Sir,—Being in. a town where we have the advantages of a weekly haif holiday and 6 o'clock closing, I think it may help you to agitate for som alteration in the state of affairs up your way, to let you know what is thought of ifc here. The stores here have closed at 6 for about 12 years, and we have had the half-holiday for over 3 years, and I do not think the employers would let it fall through for any money, as it creates a nice treat in the middle of the week. I, myself, cannot." understand people keeping open as your business people do. They are only ruining their health, and they cannot expect employees to do them justice, as flesh and blood cannot stand the strain—especially in the summer months. There are always a few customers against it,- as there were here—people saying it was a great inconvenience. How is it they never complain about the inconvenience of the Banks closing ac the hours they do, or of the Lands and Courts Offices ? People...
