A YEAR'S RAIN. BELOW THE AVERAGE. Drought In The Back Country. By a Special Reporter. [Newspaper Article] — The Register News-Pictorial — 1 January 1929

?Ph years: w; BE0W THE AVERAGE, ? .'♦ - Drought In The Back Country. By a Special Reporter. Nobody is more keen about : the ? pros-, perity' of .'the' State than Mr. E. Bromley (divisional meterologist). - The more rain he can record' the better 'he is pleased. No - matter ' where, it falls, 'the 'quantity all goes down in his carefully .kept' books at West terrace, and he . can ... toll' -jpu accurately how much has. been- gauged for any day, week, or month- for. 90 years. He is forever engaged in a meteorological game of two-up,. with. its Micawbe'r-like uncertainties.- First he looks up at the sky (when clouds are about), and. then down 'at the ground (after rain has fallen). The : bigger the downfall the more the coffers of the State will benefit indirectly. After he . had . told'.. ;a reporter on ? Monday ? that-- the .total j regi-' stratum for Adelaide, in 1928 was 19.43 in., . Mr. Bromley - added .optimis tically— 'Although ..it was.still below thi* average of 21.16 in., it....

With the exception of a few. sta tions in the settled areas, chiefly to the south and south-east, the total rain for 1928 was, as in the previous year, again below the average. In South Australia the deficiency mainly ranged from 2 to 5 in., while at a few stations,, chiefly in the north and north-west, the subnor tnality amounted to 6 or* 7 in., the nega tive variation at Quorn being 769 points and Wilmington 726 points. Severe drought conditions prevailed practically throughout the year over the pastoral areas of South and Central Aus tralia. Some stations experienced one of the driest, if not the driest, year on re cord, the total rainfall at most places being under 5 in., while some stations in the far north, north-west,...
