Obituiaary. The death occurred in Mel bourne last week of Mrs. Sarah Jessie Gilbert, wife of Mr..H. T. Gilbert, of Taraville, near Yar ram. The late Mrs. Gilbert was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Creighton, of Gobur, and was 64. years of age at the time of her death. She, with her husband and family, resided at Alexandra about 17 years ago. The funeral took place at the Alexandra cemetery on Saturday last, the cortege leaving from St. John's Church of England. Rev. S. Taylor conducted the services at the Church and at the grave side. Mrs. Eddie Weeks, Mrs. Cliff Armstrong and Mrs. Living stone (all' of Alexandra) are daughters of the late Mrs. Gil bert. The deceased was well known throughout this district, and was held in high esteem by a big circle of friends. Another old and highly respec ted resident of the cistrict passed away on Monday last. R.S.L. NEWS. Committee Meeting. Members of the executive com mittee are reminded that the month ly meeting of the committee will be held in the club room to-night at 8 o'clock. Army Platoon for District. The young men of the district will no doubt welcome the news thas the Army is desirous of form ing a platoon of the Citizen .Army in Alexandra, and, as R.S.L. pol icy dictates, the Alexandra Sub" Branch is fostering this project. The Shire Council has been ap proached, and has luntimated that every assistance and support will be tendered by that municipal body. Platoon strength is thirty nine (all ranks), and as many applications have already been received, it ap pears that ample recruits will be forthcoming. A nucleus of the N.C.O. with war service has been found to assist with early training until training proceeds to a point when N.C.O.'s can be appointed from the ranks of the recruits. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr. Thompson reported, Sanitary Services, Alexandra and Thornon (A. R. Moore).-In progress. Formation and Gravelling, Maroon dabh ighway at Kanumbra, Direct Labor.-In progress. The work, when pegged out twelve months ago, was planned for a speed value of 50 miles per hour. When the plans were sent to the Board they required a speed value of 60 miles per hour, with visi bility over vertical curves for 550 feet observed f~om a height of four feet at one end to a four inch block at the other. The width of formation of 28 feet, with of pavement of 21 feet. Samples of gravel were sent, also the samples of foundations of the road The gravel sample submitted is not good enough, and will need either a three-inch coat of fine crushed rockl over the top of same or a mixture of coarse sand to pit gravel of one in four. INCOME TAX QUESTIONS. In the House of Representatives re cently Mr. W. J. Hutchinson asked a question about income tax' allow ances. The question and answer are published below: Mr. Hutchinson: I direct a question to the Treasurer relating to deduc tions for income tax purposes of, al lowances for "found" employees. Ar bitration Court awards allow a sum of from 30/- a week upwards as the. value of keep for an employee. For income tax purposes that amount is added to a "found" employee's wages, but the employer is allowed a deduc tion in respect of such employees of only 15/-, the amount fixed about 40 years ago, but which is out of propor tion to present costs. - Mr. Deputy Speaker: Order!
