General News. [Newspaper Article] — The Wollondilly Press — 4 April 1906

Gesaera! Hews. . . Lowest prices and high quality goods —these two factors have combined to make Hill Bros, the busy commercial ■ centre of the district. By a disastrous fire which occurred in Clarence and Kent streets, Sydnej', early on Saturday morning last, the whole of Edwards, Dunlop, & Co.'s three buildings, James Steadman's two factories, and a new warehouse were absolutely gutted. A number of other establishments were either destroyed by the immense confla gration or damaged by falling brickwork. The damage is estimated at ^"150,000. There are insurances distributed over a number of offices to the amount of about ^"122,000. During the progress of the fire the full strength of the Metropolitan Brigade, with all the suburban branches tind volunteers, were powerless. The brigade could make no impression on the flames, which only diminished as they burnt the buildings out. Over 200,000 people have viewed "The Light of the World" at the Art Gallery. Sunday's attendance wa...

Socialism. [Newspaper Article] — The Wollondilly Press — 4 April 1906

Socialism. :Mr. G. F. AUman lectured on the above: ■subject in the Moss Vale School of Arts on' Monday evening. Mr. Allman - con-: sidered that socialism in itself contained the only/true solution of the manner in which the race would eventually, hold body and soul together.' Some years ago he had had a vision in which this- problem had been revealed to him, and from:; that ■ time he-had left no stone unturned in div ing into this great-question of socialism. He read an extract from "The People," a socialistic newspaper, which briefly gave the ethics of socialism: It was simply applied Christianity—the ethics of Chris tianity applied to human life.' ' The-theory of the true socialist was that the people ■must control the.landj with the materials of production and distribution; that the people should control all the great com bines for themselves-and by themselves ; and that the whole .united intelligence should grasp this great problem, and work it out and test it for themselves.
