OUR ORCHARDS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 10 September 1898

O OUR ORCI~'RS. Mr. J. Cronan, Government Ini I spector under the Vegetation Diseases 1 Board, arrived in Healesville on Mon I day last for the purpose of inspecting the various orchards in our midst. The gentleman named commenced his duties shortly artersatfival, and has been engaged in his, work throughout the week. bDuring the couise of his visit through the several allotments under cultivation, he found that the mussel scale and codlin moth were very common amongst the trees of older growth, but the .majority cf trees in the larger orchards are for the most part generally clean.' The visit of Mr. Cronan to this district just now will be of great benefit :to growers, as his knowledge and experience are of immense value to those who need his services, more especially as the.fruit season will be shortly upon us. Mr. Cronan informs us that the visit he is now undertaking is only partial in character, but a more important in spection will be made in the summer, when the trees are in ...

A Lady 80 years old Cured by Bile Beans. SUFFERED FOR FORTY YEARS DISCHARGED FROM A HOSPITAL AS INCURABLE [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 10 September 1898

A'Lady 80 years. old. Cured by Bile Beans. SUFFERED FOR FORTTY YE RS DISCHARGED 'FROM A HOSPI TAL AS INCURABLE From time to time many wonderful cures have been placed to the credit of Bile Beans for Biliousness. We have ntvw to chronic a the marvellous case of an old lady of 80 summers, who has suffered the most excruciating agony for the past forty years. Her name is Mrs. Bridget M'Arney, of Gibson Street, Bowden, Adelaide, where a re porter of the Adelaide " Advertiser" interviewed her on Monday, June 20th, 1898. Mrs. M'Arnsy is a typical daughter of the Emerald Isle." She has lived at her present address for nearly nine years, and in the district for seventeen years, and is very widely known. "Tell you the story of my illness ?" she said, in response to a preliminary question ; " certainly I will, with pleasure. " " Well, about forty years ago I became very ill. I suffered from severe pains in the head, chest, and stomach, .and used to have bad fits of retching, and always, on. g...

DIAMOND CUTTING. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 10 September 1898

DIAMO?VD. CUTTING. The rough stone is, in the first instanoe. put into the hands of the "splitter." It must be'noted that three operations must-be gone through before the stone is fit to bb put into the hands of the manufacturing jeweller: - (1) splitting, (2) cutting, (3) polishing:. Iard as the diamond: is, the stone is capable of cleavage in certain -direo .:tions, and thus an enormous' amoint of labour in cutting is saved. An exception. ally skilled operative alone is permitted to do this work. He must be able to see at once every flaw and imperfection in the stone, and conduct his work in such wise as to get rid of them as far as possible, ahnd thus to prepare the rough stone for the cutter. As the splitting is, so to speak, the more intellectual work, so is the cutter's' by far the most laborious. 'The operation is done mainly by hand, and requires a great deal of muscular force; so much so, that the workmen are obliged to wear very, stiff fin gered gloves with the tips cut of...

OJft 4 itarbian. PUBLISHIED SATURDAY MORNING~. SA TURDA Y, SEPTEMBER 17, 1898. HOW WILL FEDERAATION BE AFFECTED ? POLITICS in New South Wales just now seems to be in a very turbulent state. It would not matter much to the people of Victoria where they even atearthquake pitch, only that the great question of Federation; which is so inuch desired to further the interests of all Australasia, has been made the groundwork to determine the "ins" and " outs." If it had been purely a party question the fierce language and personalities which have been intro. duced into the debates could be more readily understood; but it would seem that the parties are hopelessly mixed, the Labor party, who are supposed to be staunch Protectionists, supporting -MD"r-Reid; ~ar"most"rronii ounced free trader ;-in fact, the whole debate has been carried one in a " go.s.yo p easemanner;- and who is responsi. ble for the whole of the delay, which is likely to retard the amalgamation of the colonies for an indefi...

A Dangerous Epidemic. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 17 September 1898

A Digferous Epidemic: An epidemic of influenza is at present raging in the colonies, and scarcely anyone is without at least a slight at tack. This dreadful malady is one of the most tiresome and iticonvenient diseases imaginable, and few seem to realise that an absolute cure for it is to be found in Bile Beans. Intfuen?~s totally incapacitates the sufferer front doing any sort of work, and life itself becomes a burden. There is, in the first place, a violent cold, generally in the head, and a constant and violent headache is one of the most trying symptoms. Pains, too in all parts of the body and limbs are also prominent, and a general collapse of the entire systctn follows. The appetite is im paired, and a senstion of weariness and total disability to even think in a con -~. nected manner is noticeable. Of cotlrsi as this malady gains a hold on the sys tem the symptoms become more strongly marked, until the patient is not only in an extremly delicate but an absolutely dangerous co...
