Itincoln's Uel&iioliolya His Sympathetic Nature and his Early ' Misfortunes. Those who saw much ot j&brahiim Lincoln during the later years of his life were greatly impressed with the expression of profound melancholy his face always wore in repose. Mr. Lincoln was of a peculiarly sym pathetic and kindly nature These strong characteristics influenced, .very-happily, as it proved, his entire political career. They would not seem at first glance to be efficient aids to political success ; but in the peculiar emergency which Lincoln, in the providence of God, was called to meet, no vessel of common clay could possibly have become the 'chosen of the Lord. Those acquainted with him from boy hood knew that early griefs tingod his whole life with sadness. His partner in the grocery business at Salem was 'Uncle' Billy Green, of Tallula, HI., who used at night, when the customers woro few, to hold the grammar whilo Lincoln recited his lessons. It waste his sympathetic ear Lin...

Brief Mention. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 31 January 1891

Brief Mention. The erection of the new court-house at Berry is being rapidly proceeded with. It is proposed to erect a new teacher's residence at the Cambewarra public school. This has been long wanted. Mr. and Mrs. Alick Osborne, of Kan garoo Valley, have returned home after a two year's sojourn in England. Mr. John Lindsay, of Unanderra, is now without doubt (remarks the Mercury) the proud possessor of the champion cow of the South CoaBt — his model cow having beaten all-comers at Albion Park, Dapto, and Kiama. Hamilton Wilson, tho Scotch vocalist, is now a mining manager at Pambula, and has also undertaken writing for the presi. He say* many of the Pambula mines are not being worked, notwithstanding the lease labour conditions, and that the holders are presumably waiting for a boom. Special Salvation Army meeting will be held in Nowra next Monday, TutJicUy, and Wednesday, Major and Mrs. spratt, of Goulburn, in charge. Army officers from Bulli, Wollongong, Berry, Milton, Bowral, a...

Agricultural Shows. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 31 January 1891

Agricultural Shows. At Dapto last week Mr. John Stewart of Borrj, revived the discussion which took place, during the show season of last year as to what should be done by the agricultural societies of the South ?' Coast districts towards making the ? annual shows'1 more interesting and ?? - .effective than they are at present. Mr. Stewart seldom speaks at random, what he does say being to the point :.: find, in tho matter now' referred to, , ' of some moment to agriculturists. He has again brought before the notice of those interested the advisability of ? holding an Annual exhibition of all ' prize takers at South Coast shows — .' what would be termed a champion show. Many people will agree with ,, Mr. Stbwart'b suggestions,,, as they 1. did with those hitherto thrown out by various speakers ; but does Mr. Strwabt ;nbt remember the vast amount of talk there was for about two months £f last year ; how many hours were spent on several occasions in supporting the proposal to hold a c...

Competitive Farm-house Desings. TO THE EDITOR OF THE SHOALHAVEN NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 31 January 1891

Competitive Fazm-house De signs. TO THE EDITOR OF THE 8B0ALHAVEN NEWS. Dear Sir,— By a recent decision of the Committee of the Shoalhaven A. and H. Society tho main benefit to be derived from Dr. Matthews' prize for a design for a model farm-house has been com plotely lost i so much so indeed that unless the tax upon brainB which the Society have recently imposed be removed the whole thing may result in a failure. I refer to a regulation which states that 'all the submitted designs will remain the property of the Society, ' the effect of which when viewed fairly is little short of absurd. Let us assume that six designers com pete and that the average value of their designs is £6 each (which surely is a very low value), we find that the £3 3s. prize in expected to bring £30 worth of labour to the Society, or that one man submits £5 worth of labor for a £3 3b. prize and the rest £5 each for nothing at all. If tho committee carry their rule out why not say that every homo which com pet...
