SALES OF CROWN LANDS. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 28 January 1898

I3ALES OF CRDWN LANDS. During the past year or so it is becom ing very evident to all that our Govern ment must bo getting into dire straits for want of revenue when tliey are having to resort to the old means practised by the Freetrade Governments of thp past to raise money by ttje sale of our public estate. It is a deplorable means this. and tho. sooner the country is rid of such a Ministry the better it will be for its own future. For years past wo have heard repeated time after time the same old'^platitude of ' Killing the goose that laidHho golden egg,' from many of bur representatives, and from none more strongly thau the present Minister for Lands, who is at the head of this very Department. When this gentleman first took the reins into his hands iu dealing with our Crown lands we_wcro all led to believe by his utterances, aud subsequently by his actions bearing out tho same, tjiat we had at last the right man m the right. place. In Memoriam. HICKEY. — In loving memory of my dear husband, Patrick Hickey, who died in Jerilderie, January 29th, 1890.         Beloved in life, regretted gone ; Remembered in the grave. Kind was the husband I loved and lost, Gentle, indulgent and tender: And in the days that I thought of him last, Death came and wrenched him asunder.   Dear Patrick, the grief of our parting I'm glad you never can feel;   Or the weary, sad, soul-longing That over my poor heart steals.   When I sit alone in the evening ' And watch the firelight low, ? And dream such sweet fancies Of you and the long ago. Uncared and forgotten By some he may be, But the grave that enshrouds him Is sacred to me.     All who have a father, Love him while you may ;   He will not always linger— Too soon he'll pass away. — Inserted by his fond and Ioving wife and child, Sarah Hickey and Felix Hi...

THE FEDERAL CONVENTION. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 4 February 1898

THE FEDERAL CONVENTION, The eramped views, of some of our delegates, liave been very much, in ovidence over the. rivera in our western plains at the Federal Convention lately. There has not been any. questig'i^: of 'much importance discussed as yet, the attention of the' Convention being, for the niost 'part., ccntrejl in tlio proposal for federal control of our. navigable rivers. So much time has been taken, in this dis cussion, and so many threats and, forebodings indulged in, that one would think, ' on ^sup- erficial glance, that the .subject under* dis-_ oussion was of tlio gravest importance, and that the fate of Federation hung in the bal ance. A careful examination of tlio facts will show that this is a vague and unreason able view. If tho delegates did not show, a lamentable ignorance of the subject, they ;6ertainly indulged in an enormous outflow of clap-trap absurdities, more worthy of provin cial champions than of leading statesmen.; Tho proposal of the Adelaide .
