The Little Huguenot. IN TWO CHAPTERS. CHAPTER I. [Newspaper Article] — The Charleville Times — 6 June 1896

The Little Huguenot. IN TWO CHAPTERS. CHAPTER I. THIS is the true story of the escape of a little Huguenot from the massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Day. The massacre took place at Paris, in tho year fifteen hundred and seventy-two. It was the practical consequence of the hatred of the Papists for tho members of the Be fonned Religion, who desired nothing but to think for themselves on sub jects which concerned their eternal salvation. The King of France and bis mother were at the head of the conspiracy; and the signal for the beginning of the bloodshed was the tolling of a church bell, in the im mediate neighbourhood of tho Royal Palace. Men and women of the Re formed Beligion, and their innocent children, were assassinated, under the encouragement and superintendence of the Church and the State, m all quarters of Paris. The chief man of the Huguenots—the famous Admiral de Coligny—suffered with the rest of the victims. He was officially murdered at night, in his own house, and his d...

Our Public Buildings. II Our Rialto. [Newspaper Article] — The Charleville Times — 6 June 1896

fhir Public Buildings* " The yei>ux." | NO. If. Notwithstanding my warning that the efforts to discover who I am wonlil prove utterly fatile, many a guessing gossip has gone about, nodding and smiling and de claring ho knew all about it, thus obtaining credence, and perhaps an occasional invita tion to hospitality, without the smallest right therato. I cannot help it if people are so easily gulled. I can only repeat, I am "The iEdile"—"merely this and nothing more," as Poe says in the " Raven." All the gossips in Ubnrloville, and that is a large order, if put together and compressed into one sublimated donble-distilled, triple-expansion, ten thousand-elephant-power guess, could not mention me in a score of chances. So let there be no mora about it. The original Rialto is a bridge I stood on seventy-two years ago when on my honey-moon trip to Venice. It is the place where the merchants most do con gregate and where a gentleman named Antonio (other name not recorded) had a personal...
