Financial Committee Report. HAT li S FOR 1920. General rate, 2d; heal th, 2d; road rate, ls; or on increase of 2d on tho total rates. ?Mr Hobbs said that the financial pw sition showed «that -we can only just keep going as a municipality. livery thing we are using is.dearer, and the ld rate on the roads is necessary, mid that although tho revenue was increas- ing through increased assessments, yet we don't Keel) pace with the extra, costs. This is proved by the municipality he- ilig £300 more iii debt this year than last. Councillors Bingham and Turner remarked that they don't see how any . thing less than ls 3d, never mind ls ld, was going to enable the munieipaJ ity to-carry oil. 'With an extra ld last year they still have got £300 further behind. The Walden sa"idi thc finance com- mittee felt that a. 3d rate was abso- lutely necessary, but as the farinera have had a 'bud time they have made a .compromise by making the road rate increase only ld, although they Know perfectly-well ...

Open Letter [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 20 March 1920

* * * Open Letter To tho "Warden and members of the new Town 'Hall- Committee, Ulverstone. Sirs, (Hearty congratulations upon the re- sult of your efforts r to persuade the .ratepayers to borrow 'a sum of money for. the purposes of building a new Town Hall for 'Ulverstone. You have got one step further; 319 to lil looks a sound thrashing for the "don't want to spend £80(30" ¡ratepayers-but ana- lyse the figures and it is isn't any- thing of the ¡kind-it is a "skin of the teeth" win for the party of deception. Had 33 of the votes that were given to the "'want to borrow a sum of money" party been recorded for the "dont' want to borrow £8000" the victorious boot would have been on the other leg-the leg of the party who ran straight, told the truth, and all of it, gave the public a straight ¿so, and; who had1 a sufficiently sound ease to be gentlemen, to state their ease honestly, and leave the issue to the ratepayers without the oise of canvassing, motor cars or "How to vote cards." Cartwright's Pictures. FRIDAY NIGHT. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 20 March 1920

T- T- T Cartwright's Pictures. FRIDAY NIGHT. Look at our advertisement columns and judge joyously whether it won't be just as well to turn out to-night (Fri- day) and spend the night of nights in pictureland with Cartwright's pictures. The most widely read tale in the world is "Tlie Scarlet Pimpernel," with all its thrills and all its artistic surround- ings. It will he a treat not to he missed. If it stood alone there is enough for one evening in its absorb- ing interest ; hut Tom Mix comes aJong in ¡M. Logan, U.S.A., and with the raiders and a cartoon folks won't get home until the wee small hours unless Mr Cartwright starts prompt at 8 o'clock, which he intends to do for the future. Friday night is Cartwright's night, the man who for 12 years has provided this coast with its pictures, and he starts on the stroke of 8 o'clock.

Build Now, Bricks are Going Up. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 20 March 1920

Build Now, Bricks are Going Up. Tue public meeting called to receive the report of the committee who have had the new Town Hall in hand was held on Wednesday night of last week, and its doings are now ancient history. But let us just have a skim through same. it was one of those occasions when the "least expected happened." The proceedings of the first hour went as smoothly as greased wheels. Everybody said, "Yes, papa!" Please, papa! No, papa! Thank you, papa! to all tho committee thought it advisable and sale to tell them, and so "appa- rently'' unanimously in accord with the spoon feeding taking place by the War- den and his co-mates was the audience that the Warden referred to the "unanimous meeting," and this Ava s his undoing ! Mr Freddy Armstrong, AVIIO had Made a special journey -from Wynyard . to be present to hear the committee he had oiiginally suggested give their most satisfactory report, etc., etc., etc., patted the committee on their backs and complimented them upon t...

"The Show." [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 3 April 1920

"The Show." bJvorybody was there-su little need bc said about it as a show. Tho read- ing public when they pick up the news- paper, particularly tue local paper, look for local news^ and plenty of it. If tins is admitted one would have ex- pected our contemporary the "Advo- cate" to have conic out strong with a boosting up of OUT local men and firms exhibiting at thc show, and giving the public a real stomach full of "see what our local tradesmen can do and are' doing for Ulverstone«." Possibly their reporter, Mr House, sot out with this good intention in "his mind, lor the policy of the "Advocate" is to .give everybody a fair deal all round, whether they are advertisers or not, in . their paper ; and it may bc that lacie of snace prevented them from mentioning any hut one of the exhibitors. Wc refer to Parsons and Gilmour. There were of course others, to wit, G. and A. Ellis, Devlin and AVellSj Frost and HalL But so engrossingly interesting was P. and G.'s exhibit to the reporter h...

Cartwright's Pictures. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 3 April 1920

Cartwright's Pictures. Another humper on Friday last. It is wonderful what pictures can do for . the most depressed of human beings. Why we were dashing through the snow cloud mountain passes and streets to the jungle of the sledge bells on the dogs for an nour and a half, and it positively made one feel cold sitting there watching the unroll- ing of one of the most beautiful pic- tures seen in Ulverstone for som© time. Ifut to-night (Friday) offers the pic turegoer an opportunity of seeing Gladys TJrockwell in "The Strange Woman," which has been- without question the biggest hit in 25 years. It is difficult to pick out one of Friday night's programmes as being better th anv another; hut certainly each Fri- day night Mr Cartwright seemes to spring some pleasant surprise on hie audience. Don't overlook the follow- ing facts-Cartwright has catered for the picture-going public of Ulverstone for 14 years ; lie shows every Friday night, and starts promptly at 8 o'clock.

New Town Hall. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 3 April 1920

New Town Hall. From information received from a reliable and semi-official quarter it is more than likely the bill to borrow £8000 (not "a sum of money") for the erection of . a new Town Hall will not receive the approval bf Parliament before September next. Our "£1 a day M.P.'s" don't meet again until July, and then they will have one or two more important matters to attend to before even the T.H. Bill. The paragraphs in the "Advocate" about early starts at building opera- tions, etc., are so much twaddle if tins is the case.

Bowls. ULVERSTONE v. DEVONPORT. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 3 April 1920

Bowls. ULVERSTONE v. DEVONPORT. Tho hist of the pennant matches be- tween these clubs t'ov the season 1919 20 was played, in delightful weather on Saturday. The previous encounter at Devonport was played through del- uges of rain, but Saturday was ideal; "Ulverstone gathered a scratch team together when it was announced that the Devonport men were in the town. Unfortunately the secretary (Mr Fred. ,Armstrong), like most other people in that one respect, can only do one thing at a time properly-and as he naturally . attends ,to his own business affairs and interests before those of the Bowling Club, things have got into a very disorganised state, as Saturday's dilemma shows. His absence from the district was evidently responsible for his not letting the members know to expect Devonport and for not calling' his selection com- mittee together. But it is an ill wind that blows no- body any good, and so on Saturday, for it enabled Devonport to score a win of 28 points to the good as the ...

Fendall Thompson may after all be persuaded^ to stand for the Council in April, UL VER STONE.-Town "Ward-Th ero are likely to be "two Richmonds in the Field" for this Ward. R. L. THE WHARF CONNECTION. [Newspaper Article] — The Leven Lever — 3 April 1920

THE WHARF CONNECTION. What a sensation it would cause if, alter Mr' Groonie-Butler has completed his surveying and levelling of the pro- posed route for this railway^connec tion, it was officially announced that the scheme is impracticable as contem- plated. It is one thing for public men to leave their shops and stroll down to the edge of the Anzac Parade and throw their arms about and re- mark, "It will como along here," or "it will go down there or up here" that is one thing, and quite fills the ?bill from their points of view, but when mathematical instruments and brains get to work it sometimes Plays Old Harry with the ideas of these , arm waving railway constructionists.
