THE LADIES' COLUMN. * AFTER-TEA GOSSIP. -4- BY ELLA. A thousand pounds for decorating a tem porary conservatory is a heavy item in the expensee of one dinner party. But such was the sum paid recently by the Duchess of Montrose, when the Prince of Wales was herguest. Orchids werethechosen fllowers at film cah. The firm' of M. Jesurnum, of Venice, employs no less than 4,000 persons in making thirty-four varieties of lace, all being made by either the needle or by bobinga. The number of patterns amounts to some thousands, and the prices vary from: Id. to £90 the yard. It is said that if the cabs of London were placed in one linc they would extend over forty-four miles. The largest known horse in the world belongs to Mr. John Roll, of Redmon, Illinois. It is between five and six yeaes old, isuubroken and unshod, the blacksmith of the place being afraid to undertake the latter. Its weight is 2,500 lbs, and its heiglst 20 harnds.
