The Coal Conference. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 13 January 1900

The Goal Gonference. OCR article 011 the above is unfortunately crawded out, owing to lack of space. -It will appear next week. Mr Macdonnell has stated on oath that he broke into the Lambton electric lighting station on his own, and not in his capacity as bailiff for the bank. If that is true, Mr. Macdonnell should have been treated as a common housebreaker, and should now be ' doing time.' It was Attorney-General G.H. Reid who declined to file after ' Mac ' had been committed for trial. According to Mr. Donaldson's decision in the Lambton case, if a municipality lights its streets for one night, it can then shut the light off for the remainder of the year, and still collect the full rate. — 0 — Llewellyn Davies is the name of the informer in the Grainger case. He lives in Lambton — o— Magistrate Donaldson's de cision in the Lambton lighting cases, came as a surprise to every body, especially in view of the Chief Justice's utterances on the subject. ^ The advantages of the new tram...

The Wharf Laborers' Slavery. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 13 January 1900

The Wharf Laborers' Slavery. A few issues back The People directed Attention to the conditions   which the workers on the New- castle wharf were compelled to submit to. We then exposed the sweating practised by the New- castle and Hunter River S.S. Co., which subjected the wharf laborers to, in some cases, 100 hours' labor per week, and seldom less than 80 hours, for the munificent re- muneration of £2 2s ; and we had hoped that that exposure would for very shame's sake, have' com pelled the Newcastle public to take some action in the matter. We knew then, as we know now, that only the fear of a reduction in its profits, would influence the direc- torate to accord its employees better treatment So far, nothing has been done in that direction. The people who are yelling them- selves hoarse about the Outlanders   grievances in the Transvaal are not concerned about the degra- dation and slauery of working men at their own doors. Why? Be-   cause t...

JOTTINGS. Queer Reasoning. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 20 January 1900

JOTTINGS. [From the Sanctum.] Queer Reasoning. Gympib ' Truth ' — a Leperland Labor paper — is taking up the queerest ' Yes-No ' attitude imaginable In connection with the Transvaal war. It says : We still believe the war to be wicked I in its inception and its aim. We still believe that our gallant troop* are being sent to kill and be killed with no higher object than the theft of the Boer's gold. We still be'ieve that the ethics of this sanguinary conflict are indistinguishable on the British side from those of a high way robbery with violence We still believe that the men respon sible fcr the w»r— ths Rhodes, the De Beers, and the Chamberlains — are as criminally guilty as air broad arrows i convict in Her Majesty's gaols. Bat now that the deed ha« been done we see nothing for it buj, to go on. It is a repugnant doctrine- that baring cone wrong we must persevere in the wrong, dcing and push it to the bitter end. It is stated that this attitude is adopted because to draw back now ...

TACTICAL. The Recruiting Ground for the Army of Socaillsm. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 20 January 1900

TACTICAL. The Recruiting Ground for tne Army of Socailism. Modern society cannot escape shipwreck unless it reorganise itself into a co-operative common wealth. The establishment of the Co-operative Commonwealth im plies a social revolution ; it im plies the overthrow of the capi talist system of production, that ? ? Ir, «11 uoo ucuumc a, uiag tu aix luiiaci development, and an incubus upon the common weal ; it means the placing of the machinery of production, now held and owned by landlords and capitalists, into the hands of the people ; in other words, it implies the downfall of the system of private ownership in the implements of labor — land and capital, i.e., machines, tools, etc. — and its substitution with public, common, collective owner ship, to be operated for use and not for private profit. The substitution t)f the capitalist with the co-operative or socialist system of production is in the in terest not of the propertiless classes alone, but of all classes. The same as s...

Key Note. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 20 January 1900

Key Note. Scientific Socialism is no ready-made ?uit of clothes that might be put on to morrow. Nor does it expect to over throw the competitive system on Mon day and have the mileenium in full bloom by Sunday It is essentially a principle of action, of reorganisation. And the manner in which it can be realised, must necessarily depend on tbe conditions existing when public opinion is sufficiently aivanced to make its application possible. William 8choI/L McCluBi, THE PEOPLE ANO THE COLLECTIVISM 3he World for the World's Workers.
