THE TOWN PICNIC. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 29 November 1895

THE TOWN PIONIO. " s-Nortl Melbourne to have its annual picnic next year?" This is the question which is at present exercising the minds of s few wotlhy citizens, who consider ii their duty to arouse lyical interest in the matter. Our readers will remember that an inaugural. excursion of adult and juvenile residents was held this year, at Mordialloc, and its results, both from a social and financial point of view, were decidedly encouraging. In fact, those in the best position to judge and adequately estimate the ditliculties and expense of initiatiating such an undertaking, pro -nounced it a signal success. With the object, therefore, of perpetu ating'the'movement?_anleeing sLthose_ interested was held last Monday evening, when it was ,determined to evoke the patronage-and-assisthnc-of -thie T-own otouncil, hindrder that this year's festivaL might receive official recognition from our iunlicipal representatives. CORRESPONDENCE. We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents. MINIMUM WAGE. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 29 November 1895

CORRESPONDENCE. -4--t We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents. MINIMUM WAGE. (To the Editor.) SSin.-The uestion of a minimum wage and the best methods of enforcing its payment has occupied the attention of our-local- -magnates for-some-_timo. Their incubations have resulted in some very sensible and elaborate machinery being introduced into the specifications that will be inserted into the new tenders for our scavenging and horsehire contracts. Certainly credit is due for their latest efforts to secure the payment of the minimum wage to those who may be eplt-edtheisreon. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and in this particular it must be recognised that the new Councillors are showing commend able zeal to redeem their election pledges. They are now doing what they accused their opponents of wishing to do, and if their opponents were successful in being returned, and did do so, the rates would have to be raised to pay their extrava gance...

Her passengers for the most, part were staid and prosaic Vandemonians, whose sole relax ation consisted in theirannual tripacrossBass's Straits, to pass a few days with their friends in Victoria, and witness the Melbourne Cup race, which was now due again on the follow ing day. "Make fast there !" sang out the captain, and shortly afterwards the com panion ladder was lowered, towards which the impatient voyageurs, valise in hand, good humouredly struggled for precdlence. One of the first to descend among the expectant group of qidnunecs and friends assembled on the Janding-stage,-was a tall ntirelw-built man, of about forty years of age- Here-and-thcr;i his dark hair showed streaks of silver tokens, to observant spectators, of toilsome days among the famous mines of Tasmania, where his name was a power; and like sea...

A PRURIENT PRESS. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 29 November 1895

A PRURIENT PREdS. TnE hackneyed phrase, " the power of the Press," is one of those aphorisms that people are getting almost as tired of hearing as they are of such stereotyped sayings as "the glorious unity of the Empire," and " the bonds that bind us to-tire -mleher-countryi-','butt- at-the same time, it is acknowledged that the modern newspaper is a living and wide sl'e? i liifluence - and- Mr FRnouE, whose work, Oceana, Australians must reumember, let alone his immortal .His tory of England, has said that the Press in the nineteenth century occupies a similar position to that of the Church in the sixteenth. It is an old truism that h benefit turned intol bane is a_ doubly distilled evil, and just as an immoral schoolmaster, a swindling clergyman, or a corrupt judge, are all the more curses to the community because of their re spective positions, as regards influencing and dealing with others, so, a paper that lays itself out to propagate all that is low and lewd, and which pander...

Scores: Vi 5; - o ghtorini -- hn, Tile dismemberment of Turkey pro ceeds so slowly that it seems probable that the much needed operation will, after all, come from within rather than without. Countries where ladies are sent to their long account by havi:ng kerosene poured over then, to which a lighted match is afterwards applied do need drastic overhauling. But if Turkey is a land of barbarisms, what must be thought of Persia ? In the laud of the placid Parsee unfaithful wives are tmore effectively treated than their Turkish sisters. SECOND ELEVENS The North second are to be congratulated on their splendid performances up to the present. In the first round they gained a somewhat easy victory over the Carlton second, and have now capped this by a really clever win from the Richmond second eleven, with three wickets to spare. They have some very capable batsmen in their ranks, notably Ryan, .Doherty, Rundle, Jim Howlett, and the veteran Clucas; whilst amongst a strong arry of bowling talent may be named McClelland, Ming, 3lolyneaux, W.
