DOES THE MOON INELUENCE THE WEATHER[?] [Newspaper Article] — The Port Macquarie News and Hastings River Advocate — 21 October 1882

And although such changes -!?- not take place wilh the sunie regularity as the tides, they doubtless come about the periods, say within a day, of the unions change. Scientific Jottings. A STUOXlJ ROP13 KJtOM SHBEP'S ENTRAILS. A rope as above is made at Oakland, Cali fornia. A j-ineh rope is said to stand a strain of 7 tons, and to last 10 years. In the preparation the entrails are first thoroughly cleaned, and then placed iu vats of brine where they remain some days. The next stain' is to wind the nrciiarcd material unou bobbins after which the process is the same as in making common rope. This would be an additional industry for Australia if found upon test to be of value. Doubtless the en trails of cattle could be utilised iu the same 1 manner.

Report of the Department of Lands for 1881. [Newspaper Article] — The Port Macquarie News and Hastings River Advocate — 21 October 1882

Itopsri of th.0 Dap&rbnmt of Lmi3 for 1881. Tins report has lately been published, and as we have only space for a very few remarks upon it, we may point out that the bulk — indued we may say nearly all — the sales have been of country lands. 523,657 acres were disposed of by auction ; 328,203 acres by pur chase alter auction ; a;so :;,.----.-u- acres i-y free selection, anil a total uf lauds alienated of 3,655,161 acres, of which area improve ments are given as covering 4 74,099 acres. Th« average price which these lands brought was not much more than £1 per acre, in most cases only ft few pence above that price. Laud laws, in most countries, arc always difficult matters to deal with, and certainly tho.se of New South Wales ale not free from fault. It is very evident that many choice sections have not brought nearly tlieir full value which location uud .[iiality would enhance, and at the same time others may have brought more than they were worth.
