COLONIZATION OF NEW CALEDONIA. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 8 July 1858

COLONIZATION OF NEW CALEDONIA. Some time ago we mentioned that a company of gentlemen connected with the colony had obtained an extensive grant of land in New Caledonia with the view of ultimately establish ing in that island coffee and sugar plantations. The originator of this enterprise, Mr. Byrne, who visited Sydney about two years ago, has recently returned to the colony, and we learn from him some interesting facts in relation to the subject. Mr. Byrne has succeeded in obtaining from the Emperor Napoleon a decree bearing date February 17 of the present year, by which he and his coadjutors have ceded to them at once 200,000 acres of land stretching across the island and including a harbour on each coast, with the privilege of taking up on easy conditions, from time to time, other land to the extent of 2,000,000 acres. One condition of the treaty or contract is that the company shall introduce 1000 persons for every 100,000 acres of land, it   being stipulated, howev...

THE DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DRAYTON, THURSDAY, JULY 8, 1858. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 8 July 1858

DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DRAYTON, THURSDAY, JULY 8, 1858. THE question of Chinese Immigration is one of the most important, and, at the same time, the most peculiar, that has ever been brought under the eonaideratioa of the Lcgulaten. Tbees people are now arriving in «neh numbers as to be a source of very serious embarrassment, not only to the Government, but also to the European mining population, which cannot fail of being productive of anarchy and confusion, unless some stringent measures are taken to limit their intro- duction. We hold that the Legislature has an undoubted power to restrict, if not to prohibit entirely, the influx of these Asiatics; for, by the law of nations - commonly called international law - one state or colony has the right to dictate to another state whether any intercourse is to be allowed, or, if any, upon what terms and con- ditions, It is a right, as absolute in any political community, as it is in an individual to refuse altogether to associate with an...

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 8 July 1858

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. — We have just received the first number of this new contem- porary which is published at Drayton, By Mr.   Lyon, late editor of the North Australian, and long known in this district in connection with newspaper enterprise. The Gazette is a well arranged and neatly printed sheet, and is a most praiseworthy start for the rising com- munity on the Downs. We are glad to observe   the extension of journalists into the interior.   We shall be pleased to find our contemporary           prosper more especially if by the advocacy of measures and means for the general public he shall deserve it. Judiciously managed it can hardly fail to command a fair amount of success. — M. B. Courier, June 12. THE DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. — We have received the first number of this journal, and we   must bear testimony to the very superior &...

LATEST INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 8 July 1858

LATEST INTELLIGENCE. UP to the time of our going to press the Ipswich   mail had not arrived. We are indebted to the Mait- land Mercury of the 29th ultimo, and the Armidale Express of the 3rd instant, received by the overland mail for the following items of Sydney news to the 28th. ultimo:— In the Legislative Assembly, on the 25th ultimo, the Publicans' Licensing Bill, introduced by Mr Dalley, was withdrawn. The Herald's Melbourne correspondent, under date 24th June, gives the following news:- Raven, the ab-     sconder, charged with embezzling the monies of the English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered Bank, has been examined at the police office, and committed for trial - Lionel Levi has been convicted, and sentenced   to three years' hard labour on the roads. The sentence seemed to take the convict quite by surprise, as he evi- dently calculated on escaping altogether.— the tenders for the Geelong and Ballaarat line of railway...
