LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. A PUBLIC meeting was held last night at the Club Hotel, for the purpose of adopting a me- morial to the Government to carry out the spirit of Mr. Hannington's report. A resolu- tion to the effect was proposed and carried. RETURNING OFFICER FOR NORTH GIPPS- LAND.—The Governor with the advice of the Executive Council, has been pleased to appoint George Ross, Esq., of Sale,to be the Returning Officer for the Electoral District of North Gippsland, inthe room of the Hon. Sir,-A question has arisen which may be construed unfavorably to your self, as to why you have so thoroughly ignored a letter signed " Australian," in the issue of the Guardian, published on the 20th ult. This said letter was personal and libelous, reflecting as much or more on the vehicle of its venom; than on the so-denounced "advocate of revolution and crime ;" but it had still a more general imputation; it has in- cluded those gentlenlen who almost unanimously,chose this advocate to be their exponent in North Gippsland: Viewing it in this light, I must say, with Lord Thurlow, 'I am amazed much amazed;" : not only, at the acusation made, but also at the medium which permitted it to go before the world, a specific charge against itself, against us, and against the principles, which we   have chosen as our own, and of which we had chosen...

CRICKET.         At a public meeting held at the Royal Exchange Hotel on Thursday Evening, the 10th inst, for the purpose of finally establishing a Cricket Club Mr. Hart was called to the chair.   The resolutions of the preliminary meeting were confirmed.
