Water plan costs skyrocketing PIPE SHORTAGE MAY ADD £20,000 [Newspaper Article] — Western Star — 12 November 1948

Water plan costs skyrocketing PIPE SHORTAGE MAY ADD £20,000 Shortage of cast iron spun piping will either add mine >han £20,000 to the Roma Town Council's plan to renew ike iowu's water reticulation system—or eke postpone it for years. Original estimate of the scheme was £56,000, but if cement piping is used the final figures will be in excess of £76,000. The Council is at present con. sidering the possibility of I'sing cement piping, which wil prob ably enable a start to be made some time next year after tlie com pletion of financial arrangements with the Government for the year's loan programme. Inadequate System The scheme involves the replacing of almost all of the town's reticulation system, based mainly at present ou an inadequate three-inch main. (Fire Insurance companies...

EUROPEAN BUYERS HELP WOOL SALES [Newspaper Article] — Western Star — 12 November 1948

EUROPEAN BUYERS HELP WOOL SALES Continental competition has been the strongest feature of the recent wool sales, according to an analy sis prepared ljy Winchcombe Oar son Ltd. The report says tlint Great britain has also operated freely, but that the demand from the United States ha? so far been below that of preceding sea sons. Russia and Australian mill men, however, have kept in the picture. American orders, it says, are likely to extend in future over a wider range ol' merino types and to crossbrcds this season, and will probably be loss cen tered "D fine, speciality merinos than the.v were a year ago. Public resist ance to the high prices is compelling the mills in America to produce goods which can be purchased at lower prices, and the use of less costly raw material is one wuy ol' meeting that need. Fair Inquiries are still being ex perienced for wool from the Mid dle East and East. Japaji is to be provided through American ar rangements with appreciable ship ments of raw mat...

44 I don't agree . In spite of your opinion, Mr. Chairman, I am strongly against the proposal before the meeting." That's Bob Freeland's way. He says what he feels, and calls a spade a spade. In some parts of the world. Governments control every phase of a person's life, and the Bob Freelands daren't say what they think for fear of the conse quences to themselves and their families. Fortunately, we in Australia, with some very minor re strictions, can say whatever we like, to whoever we like and when we like. Freedom of Speech, in fact, is one of the most cherished possessions of our Aust ralian way of life. So be on your guard and say what you feel when you hear of any new proposal which would take away any of our freedoms. Let's keep to the Australian Way, it's a free road and—it's the Right Road.
