Alleged Horse Stealing. [Newspaper Article] — The Muswellbrook Chronicle — 5 January 1898

Alleged Horse Stealing. A man, named Frederick Carlton, was brought before Mr. J. Mcln- tyre, J.P., at the local Police Court, on Saturday, 1st Jannary, charged with stealing a horse, saddle, and bridle, the property of James Lloyd, of Ardglen, on Thursday morning last, and re- manded to Murrurundi. A telegram was sent to Sergeant Forrest by the Murrurundi Police on Friday morning, giving information about the stolen horse, etc., and a description of a man who was seen riding the animal through Murrurundi. A watch was kept by the police with the result that accused was found under the iron bridge on the Ka- yuga and Wybong road and arrested by Constable Harrison for the offence stated. From inquiries made by the police it appears that the stolen prop- erty was sold in Scone and the accused afterwards purchased a blanket and other things at McKenzie's store, Aber- deen. Collision in Newcastle Harbour. [Newspaper Article] — The Muswellbrook Chronicle — 5 January 1898

Collision in Newcastle Harbour. A GREAT sensation was caused in Newcastle harbour on Saturday last, when a ferry boat running to Stockton crashed into a dredge anchored in the harbour. From the account given by an eyewitness of the accident it appears that the ferry boat was returning to Newcastle from a trip to Stockton, where, unknown to the captain the steersman had been accidentally left behind. When the attention of the captain—who was collecting fares at the time—was called to the fact that the boat was running straight for the punt he shouted "Port your helm ! Port your helm !" But there was no one at the wheel to obey the command Seeing this he shouted to the engineer to go full speed astern ; but the latter was so surprised at the order that he left his station to learn the reason for the oder, and although he instantly afterwards obeyed the order, the vessel had too much way on and she crashed brodaside on to the dredge.
