ODDS AND ENDS. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 6 September 1879

ODDS AND ENDS. BY KDNOHOO. IN the political arena things arc going on beautifully. The Legislative machinery was never in better working order, and Bills have been turned out by the dozen. One of these measures (the most interesting to the Darcoo)' is that the Central line is to be pushed ahead, BO that in a short time we may crj>ect to eoc the iron horse leavening regions where it has hitherto been unknown. I had a hope that on the meeting of Parliament, when this large proportion of the intelligent members of the community got upon their legs and gave voice to their pent up thoughts, there would be a greater variety of good things emanating from many ou the Bide of the Opposition; but up to date nothing very re markable bos been placed upon the board by those who compose this side of the House. One after the other the troublesome clajn trap members have re-echoed tlic sentiments of their leaders. We have, it would seem, almost become a one-sided community, that is so far as can...

Vita tins literii morj at. BLACKALL, SATURDAY, 8EPT. 6. Ai-i/who are oonoerned in the welfare end progress of the rich pastoral dis tricts of Western Queensland must hare perused with much interest and gratifi cation the speech of the Member for Gregory in (he last files of Hansard. The primary objection against the Gov ernment policy was that the Pbemier bad made no provision for paying interest upon the loan. This objection Mr. LtmLBr HILL meets by showing that the extension of railways out west will considerably enhanoe the value of laud in the outlying districts, and that every year that value will be increased. Last September £15,883 was paid as pastoral rents for runs in the Gregory Districts; this month £22,119, representing an increase of nearly 50 per cent., is due. Thore is not the least doubt now that the promised extension of the railways out west will be a great inducement to sheep owners to bring their stock into the district. From what we have seen of the wool aiid sh...
