Our Railway Policy. [Newspaper Article] — The Southern Mail — 10 September 1889

Our Railway Policy. (BY ITALIA.) The New Sonth Wales Railways have become op. of the most important factors that are helping to build up our national greatness. The railway policy has uudergone, aua is still undergoing, some important changes, and it appears to us that very great changes are still necessary in what we shall term a National Policy, which ought to be the policy of tbe future. A glance at the Parliamen tary reports in tbe daily papers clearly indicate a chaotic state of afiairs. Each sitting in the As sembly brings a growl from an bon. member con cerning that which he alleges to be neglect on the ' Government side in constructing a railway to or froin Bome point or other. In every new branch submitted to parliament, a lamentable amount of 1 rivalry and party-feeling is also exhibited^ We have their highly-paid officials who visit various parts of the country reporting on suggested lines. We also have a Public Works Committee who : analyise these reports. Still we find ...

The company then altered the scale of prices, giving half aa uiucli per gallon for uiilk as the best butter would bring, limiting the suppliers in summer to the average quantity sent during tho winter ; but the price up to the limit was never to be less than 8d per gallon, the Burplus being one third the price of 'butter. While the Illawarra line was Leino con structed the Company reduced the limit price to five-twelft...

Concert at Mittagong. [Newspaper Article] — The Southern Mail — 10 September 1889

Concert at Mittagong. Ox Saturday eveuing tbe Church of England Schoolroom was the scene of a grand concert in aid of the debt on the Presbyterian Church. Tiiis building has been considerably enlarged of late, and the improvement was very evident, not only in the increased accommodation provided, but in the superior acoustic properties observable. Whether this latter result was more noticeable be cause of the sparse audience at the end of the room remains to be proved ; but on the eveuuig iu ijucbuuu, ujusc ttu tue uuuk. uuuiu hear quite as distinctly as those in front — a point worthy of mention in a concert-room. On entering, one was struck with the taste ful appearance of the stage, which had been decorated by ladies of tbe congregation. Ivy formed the principal background, and stand ing out from its glossy depths gleamed the cordial word, ' Welcome,' done in snowy letters, the effect being exceedingly pretty. The audience would have crammed the old building ; but owing to the en...
