MELBOURNE LETTER. (IP'ROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT). From a legislative point of view. acarcely any progross has been made during the past week, although the Miilng on Private Pro perty Bill has occupied thie att, ntiou of honorable members, and on Thursday evening Mr Bierry was to make his flnaocial statement, The latter hls been of course looked forward to with some interest in connection with the anticipated changes in the ariffi and the long talkedl of Liud Tax. 'Those, holwevor, who profess to be in the secret say that nothing very startling in either direction will be pro pounded. The Council have decided to take evidence respecting the Oakleiglh Railway route, and the hopes of the Outer Cirolists have somowhat revived; but in the meantime a eohemo of "polsiblo cetenliona" frqme the Government direct line have been promul gated, which for magnitude of conception are calculated to take one's breath away. dli audii & cir e anil1atr1 PUil1a.Ieii F.VERY BATURIDAY " EXCELSI OIi." SATURDAY, 18TH AUGUST, 1877. Oun quiet little town was thrown into quite a state of excitement on Tuesday last by the extraordinary proceedings of our representatives in the Shire Council, some of whom appear to have acted in anything but a constitutional or fearless manner. Previous to the late election there appeared to be little party feeling exhibited, but since the polling day, and more especially on the eve of the election of a President for tihe ensuing year, the true colors of the different councillors have been brought to light, and there appears to be no small amount of petty jealousy existing between the different cliques. We are not at all surprised at the appearance of these party feelings, but must confess that the conduct of some of the coun cillors astonished us. Such .disputes have taken place in other plsaces, but never have we before seen gentlemen pledged to transact the ratepayers' ...

WAR IN THE EAST. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 18 August 1877

WAR IN THE EAST.   We are indebted to our Melbourne contem- poraries for the following extracts:— LONDON, 14th August.   The correspondent of the Daily News at Bucharest reports a wholesale butchery of Christians south of the Balkans by Turkish troops, who were   instigated and aided by merchants and landed proprietors. In the Tehirpan district, in the neighbourhood of Philipopolis, 30 churches and 500 schools and colleges have been burnt, and the Bulgarian       fugitives estimate that from 12,000 to 15,000 persons have been massacred or burnt in their houses. Sixty villages have been destroyed. Several Turkish boys were personally engaged in the work of slaughter. The statement as to the atrocities has been confirmed by The Times, with harrowing details. There are frequent skirmishes be- tween the Russians and Turks in Bulgaria, the latter obtaining the ad- vantage.   The position of the Rus...

WARDEN'S COURT. Monday, August 13. (Before Captain Pasco, Warden). [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 18 August 1877

WARDEN'S COURT. Monday, August 13. (Before Captain Pasco, Warden). Shaw v. M'Waters.-Interpleader suit.-Moon v. Shaw, Alston, and others. Mr Coster for the judgment creditor. This was an action for wrongful seizure of tools and mining appliances under an execution warrant. It appeared that the goods in question had been purchased by the Vortex Co-operative Company, in which M'Waters and one John Watt were shareholders. Calls had been made and responded to by all the shareholders with the exception of the two last-named parties, the result being that Shaw sued them separately and obtained judgment. A. G. Moon, manager of the Vortex Co., proved that the goods were purchased and paid for by him on behalf of the company, and that M'Waters had paid no part of the cost, and had ceased to be a shareholder before the commencement of these pro- ceedings. The Warden in giving his decision said the equity of the case was with the company, but the fact of its not being registered gave any credi...

YEA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 18 August 1877

YEA. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT). The meeting of the Shire Council called for the 10th inst. lapsed for want of a quorum. Mr Sanderson, manager of the Provi- dence Reef, reports that the machinery is now in order for crushing the pyrites, which he shall commence doing early next week. It is proposed to invite Mr D. M'Leish to a champagne lunch, as a mark of respect for his lengthened services as a shire councillor. Duncan, son of Mr D. M'Leish, had an exceedingly narrow escape, not likely to occur twice, from being killed on Sunday evening. While riding home about a mile from the township at a strong pace his horse took fright at a cow lying in the middle of the road, and shied, carrying him with great violence against a stump. A portion of the stump, which was torn up by the roots, entered the horse's chest, killing him on the spot. M'Leish, who was picked up for dead, received a severe blow above the left temple, but being only stunned, he gradually recovered, and is now quite well. ...

GOBUR. August 16. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 18 August 1877

GOBUR.   August 16.   The election of the 9th inst. is now a thing of the past, and may oblivion seize it. It was one of the dullest and driest affairs ever witnessed on Gobur. Not one solitary son of Bacchus was to be seen in the township to cheer the dull hours away. One or two lessons may be gathered from the election-either the people are becoming exceedingly religious, moral, and meritorious in their conduct, or "grim penury checks their noble rage, and freezes the genial current of their souls." The worthy host of the Reefers' Hotel, Mr O'Callaghan, intends giving a farmers' ball shortly. From his genial manner and well-known ability as a caterer for the public amusement, the sons and daughters of Ceres may look forward to the occasion with pleasure. I was rather amused the other day, when paying my subscription for my daily paper, at the person receiving it telling me I was very foolish in paying for papers. I replied that if I did not mind paying fo...

MY WIFE'S MAID AND THE DETECTIVE. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 August 1877

MY WIFE'S MAID AND THE DETEOTIVE. The series of burglaries which startled the public in the autumn and early ..winter of the year 186- was of a description to alarm any household. The general features of each robbery were the same. In every case a gang of from seven to eleven masked men lied broken into an isolated dwolling containing an unusual amount of silver or jewels; had intimidated the inmates by .threatening them with firearms, mastered them, secured them, gagged them, and then proceeded methodically to strip the house of all the valuables it contained. 'fThlir intelligence of the premises was never at fault. Secret drawerse end sliding panels, supposed to' be known only to the family, wore sought and opened at once and safes, whether built into the wall or exposed in closets, worn equanlly at their mercy, and easily forced by means of drills and gunpowder. The police seemed indefatigable in investigation and pur suit, yet five of these audacious robberies had succeeded each...

MELBOURNE LETTER. (FROM OUR OWN CORIIIESPONDENT). Government by party may he sail to be appronching a perfection of development witlh us at thle present time. VWe have that much coveted thing, a strong Government, and as far as the popular Chamber is concerned, a majority which it is no libel to call subservient in its obedience to its leaders.
