Cultivation of Oil Plants , Our farmers have been so long accustomed to the regular routine of wheat , corn and oats that they will only adopt newer systems cautiously . In that respect they are correct , for farming is sometimes too precarious a business to risk a season on some unknown crop or with which they are not familiar . Yet , it is the duty of farmers to conduct farming iu a business-like manner , and endeavor to branch off , whenever possible , to newer enterprises that may give promise of success . By newer enterprise we do not suggest that business not connected with the farm be engaged in , but that they be ever on the alert for the purpose of seizing any opportunity that may present itself whereby an unprofitable system may be replaced by one more satisfactory . Our country is so diversified in soil and climate that no part of it is incapable of being devoted to some crops that are not now cultivated . Among the productions that belong to the farm is oil . Already the...

The Puzzle at the Fat-Stock Show . We wish , with others , to know upon what grounds the judges who awarded the white steer , Clarence Kirklevington , the first premium for carcass , based their decision . For our part we confess our inability to see as far through a solid waU as some , and desire to be enlightened . Let ns analyze the matter and endeavor to gain light . The following is the average gain per day of the heaviest Blears l Charlie BosSi daily train i . 8 i lbs . ftfesideht , 1 . 77 Chicago , 1 . 76 Clarence Kirklevington , daily gain , 1 . 74 It will be seen that he was beaten in average gain by three steers of nearly the same age . The percent of net carcass to gross weight was as follows : President 71 per cent net . Linnet 71 Clarence Kirklevington , 70 Hoosier , 69 The white steer was beaten in net weight by President and Linnet , while he was nearly equaled by one other . Consequently he could not have been awarded the prize for daily gain nor for percentage of ne...
