NEWS COMMENTS When greenbacks are presented to draw out goid from tlhe treasury , for export , they ought to be paid in silver coin . That will maintain the reserve without increasing the debt . . The President s popular loan is all in his eye . He knows the people of sniall means have , not hoarded gold and he does not even accept legal tender . He knows they cannot go to the suib-treasuries in the big cities to get the bonds . To be popular the bonds should be at the postoffices . . Senator Allison introduced in 1 894 a joint resolution providing for a treaty with Great Britain , binding both governments to refer all differences to arbitration . The House of Commons passed a similar measure . It is now proposed that such a treaty be negotiated . In 1890 a treaty resolution passed both the Senate and the House . Monrad as a v dairy expert by the United States Department of Agriculture , mentioned a short time ago in ; these columns , was but a link in the chain , or one cog in the wheel of the • Dairy Division of the United States Department of Agriculture . The chief of the division is Major Alvord , formerly of the Oklahoma Experiment Station . His principal assistant is R . A . Pearson , a graduate of Cornell University , who has for same years been engaged in practical creamery work and high class milk business in Philadelphia . CURING HAMS . E- M . Todd of Virginia , whose cured hams have given his product a reputation that sells them whereveroffered , gives the following description of his method of curing : ;; : * 7 : / : ; -,.,. xA-A-s i :. 1 . The hams are placed iii a large tray of fine Liverpool salt , then the flesh surface iS : sprinkled with finely ground crude saltpeter : until the hams are as white as though covered by a moderate frost—or say use three or four pounds of the ; powdered saltpeter to the thousand pounds of green hams . ; . 2 . After applying the saltpeter , immediately salt with the Liverpool fine salt , covering well the entire surface : Now pack the hiams in bulk , but not in piles more tnan three feet high .
