How to Be Happy [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
How to Be Happy Rev . W . N . Tobie . A Happy New Year to my boys , and to their fathers and mothers—and sisters , too . Of course , you must all be happy , if any of you are to be , because we are so dependent on one another that , if one is unhappy , others are made more or less unhappy . An unhappy disposition is as catching as the measles . So I wish you all a Happy New Year , and I wish that by wishing I could make it so . A few years ago I wrote this little verse : A Happy New . Year ! Fervent the wish ; But wishing cannot make it so ; For this boon causeless never comes , As trees in deserts do not grow . So , if you are to be happy this year , you must get at the cause of happiness . Nobody ever found happiness , who deliberately set out to find it . Show me a person who , is trying to find happiness , and I will show you a person who is unhappy . Did you ever read the story of Rasselas ? Well , this is one of the classics you should read . It is the story of a young man and...
Mew Breeders All the Time . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
Mew Breeders All the Time . Ames , la ., Nov . 24 , 1909 . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Just at present we are all sold out as the demand for young stuff has been very active this fall and we are daily in receipt of inquiries for animals of both sexes that we cannot fill . Most of these letters come from men whom , I would judge have not been raising Berkshires and who are in a mood to change as a number of the letters state that boars are wanted to cross on sows of some other breed . Others state that they have disposed of all their sows and are expecting to start in with the Berkshires . There is no doubt in my mind that this State offers one of the most fruitful fields for development that there is now existing and if we can get the Congress Show next fall it will mean many new herds of Berkshires and most of this breeding stock will have to come from out of the State as I do not believe that there is sufficient stock in the State to supply the demand th...
Clydesdale Bargains [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
Clydesdale Bargains One of Illinois best Clydesdale breeders , Mr . W . F . McCoy , Pleasant Plains , 111 ., is offering at bargain prices two fashionably bred Clydesdale stallions , that will be two years old in May . They have size and quality to spare and Mr . McCoy informs us that they are the two best colts he ever raised . He is not only a good breeder but a man of sterling qualitites and any statement he makes can be absolutely depended upon . The Berkshire World readers should not neglect this opportunity to purchase these young draft horses at a price that will certainly make them profitable investments . The demand for draft horses continues to increase and these young stallions should pay for themselves in one or two seasons . Write W . F . McCoy , Pleasant Plains , 111 .
His Wife Knows . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
His Wife Knows . To The Berkshire World : As it is winter now every breeder ought to take good care of his brood sows for good spring litters . The present outlook for hogs is better than ever before with prices about nine cents for pork hogs and everybody in my locality is on the hog question had I only more hogs . My Berkshires are in good condition . Master Premier C . S . 113000 heads the herd as a breeder . He ranks in first line , his pigs carry small erect ears , short noses , well dished faces , good backs and hams and in fact they are what every Berkshire breed : er likes— dandies . I have some extra fall 1 pigs for sale at prices that make them go fast . There was a student from the Columbia Experiment Station of Missouri here lately and stated that he never saw a herd of Berkshires better on their feet than the Cedar Side Farm Berkshires and in my opinion I think the most hogs get off their feet by overdoing them with feed under six months . For pork hogs push them as fas...
What a Neighbor Says . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
What a Neighbor Says . One of our subscribers , Dr . S . P . Hand , Demopolis , Ala ., in a recent business letter said : I was in Livingston , Ala ., the other day and had the pleasure of seeing that most wonderful boar , Livingston Masterpiece , owned by Mr . W . K . Pickens . All I have to say it that in , my opinion he surpassed my most sanguine expectations and fully sustained his reputation . His offspring prove his prepotency and they are as fine a lot of pigs as I ever saw . I was sorry when the time came for me to leave as I felt like spending an entire day with them . I advised my brother , Dr . h . M . Hand , who on account of his health had to retire from practice and devote his time to live stock not to send out of the county for Berkshires as I consider Mr . Pickens Berkshires as fine as he would get any where in the United States .
Penshurst Farm Berkshires [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
Penshurst Farm Berkshires Narberth , Pa . Editor The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Dear Sir : —Among the spring boars and gilts we are offering for sale are some very strong candidates for the Junior Yearling class next year . The bred sows consist of daughters of Lee Premier bred to Star s Royal Masterpiece 2 d or Sterling Masterpiece and a few very choice sows bred to Lee Premier . Among the latter are some we purchased for foundation stock , ones that have proven their worth as breeders . We offer for sale to breeders , only animals good enough to retain in our own herd and by so doing we can satisfy customers and a satisfied customer is the best advertisement . The following letter is only one of many received . We took the boar out and put him in a box stall . There were three or four people here who were good judges of hogs and I think I know something about them myself but I must say that this is the finest boar that I ever saw in my life and this was the opinion of t...
Litter Mate to Invincible Master piece . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
Litter Mate to Invincible Master piece . Oklahoma is one of our recently admitted states but Oklahoma farmers and breeders are certainly up-to-date . This is true in Berkshires as well as in otner lines of live stock and our readers will be pleased to know that Geo W . Miller & Sons , Kildare , Okla ., have at the head of their Berkshire herd the great boar Artful Masterpiece 110970 , litter mate of Invincible Masterpiece , the Grand Champion at the Tennessee and Illinois State Fairs in 1909 . Messrs . Miller were extremely fortunate and showed great wisdom in their selection of this good boar and we understand that he ranks right up with his noted brother . He is a boar of wonderful size but as full of quality as a pig and is sure to prove a remarkable sire . Messrs . Miller write that they have a number of March and April gilts on hand that are extremely fancy and they will weigh between 250 and 275 lbs . They have neat heads , good backs and feet and are especially go...

Mr . Ralph Creighton , Creighton , Mo . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
Mr . Ralph Creighton , Creighton , Mo . Creighton , Mo . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —For the past month inquiries have been exceedingly good and I have made several good sales . There is no question as to the trade the coming spring . I believe that trade in Berkshires will , with the advent of spring , be the best in years , if not in Berkshire history . I base my opinion on letters I am receiving from prospective buyers . With hogs climbing up toward nine cents per pound , we can well believe there will be a good trade in breeding stock . That hogs are scarce is certainly a settled fact and when farmers and breeders come to know and realize this , ever realizing that they must have at least a few each , then it will be that prices will soar . The man that gets Into the game and buys his hogs as soon as possible will be the man who can count himself fortunate . In regard to my own herd will say that I still have some good fall pigs and a few bred sows to ...

Sold More Berkshires Than Any Firm in America . Dundee , N . Y . The Berkshire World , We are starting in the year 1910 with a herd of about 350 registered Berkshires . Just now we have on hand about a hundred sows , bred . We expect to keep about seventy of these in our regular breeding herd and sell thirty . The Right Kind of Talk [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
The Right Kind of Talk I used King Tom 71069 from August , 1907 , until his death , which occurred in December , 1908 . Himself a Universal Exposition winner and first prize winner at Missouri State Fair and sired by Masterpiece and Out of Duchess 4 th and litter-brother to Cock Robin , made King Tom a boar of some note . In addition to this , my hogs are rich in the blood of the World s Fair winners , Young Royal Duke 77368 , Gov . Lee 47971 , Stumpy Columbus 2 d and the great old sow , Columbus Lady Lee 7 th . Individually , my hogs are right and will be priced reasonably and positively guaranteed to be as represented . I have never failed to make good a guarantee or statement regarding the hogs that I have sold in the past and fully intend to conduct my business along the same lines in the future . Very truly yours , M . H . Custer , Clarksville . Tex .
Daughters of Longfellow Pre mier C . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
Daughters of Longfellow Pre mier C . At a recent sale held in Ohio , daughters of Longfellow Premier C were greatly in evidence and every one of them sold had remarkable breed character . They were very deep in body , good feet , extra good in ham and every one of them was fancy headed . They also had great lengths and much style . Berkshire breeders will do well if they buy daughters of Longfellow Premier C and especially when they can get them safely bred to a many times state fair winner such as Young Baron 4 th 122671 . This great young boar was shown by E . J . Barker , Thorntown , Ind ., in 1909 and was first at Indiana , Illinois and Wisconsin . These magnificent Longfellow Premier C sows are offered for sale at very reasonable prices by Mr . A . L . Petticord , Republic , Ohio .

An International Winner [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
An International Winner The above cut was made from a photograph taken at the late International soon after this sow had won Junior Championship . Mr . Wyman N , Lovejoy , the judge at the International , pronounced her almost a perfect type of Berkshire and for that matter an ideal hog . She was shown in the Under Six Months class and weighed 240 lbs . The picture does not do her justice and the editor of The Berkshire World joins Mr . Lovejoy in his estimation of this grand sow . She was bred , owned and exhibited by H . C . Davidson , Obion , Tenn . This youthful looking gentleman is M . W . Blair , ajvell known Live Stock Auctioneer of Guthrie , Ky . Col . Blair assisted at the American Berkshire Congress Sale at Nashville , Tenn ., in September last where he made many friends for his work on the block and in the ring . Col . Blair is also a breeder of Berkshire hogs and Jersey cattle and in his part of the State enjoys a large trade . He has been breeding Jerseys for a number o...
