f: ( iw ' v TpE PEpEWDEMT. MONDAY. MAY 27. 1895 It was not our intention to insinuate that Mr. A.. S. Hart-well "had broken any agreement in the Cupid writ of habeas corpus case. As far as the general was personally con-corned, ho did not oppose tho granting of bail to tho peti tioner. It was simply tho Court to grant bail under tho statutes. In tho Collector-General's report to the Minister of it is shown that tho importation of California wino is steadily increasing, and that tho consumption of Japanese saki has increased nearly 80,-000 gallons during tho last year. Tho California exporters of wino cried out, therefore, before they were hurt. The Minister of Finance has issued his report for tho nine months ending December 31st, 1894. Acqordingto tho report it is seen that the expenditures of tho Government for tho last two years have exceeded the Income by nearly $10,000 a month or about $350 a day.
