1 if •^ns LMI $¥\p ill The Alert, DAILY AND WEEKLY MARSHALL McCLURE. A railroad from Billings to Fort Benton is an enterprise now in contemplation "by the Northern Pacific and agitating the people of those two points. The reaper whose name is death always finds a bountiful harvest the Fourth of July. This year the Ohio river furnished the horror in the disaster to the steamer Scioto. About fifty bodies have been re covered and from twenty-five to thirty more are missing- The police raided three bagnios in Grand Forks one night last week and re corded the names of the male visitors for future use, including among the number several heads of families and young men who pride themselves on being "mashers'-1 among the young ladies in town. The summarizing of the condition of the crops form seven columns of reports from all parts of the country the Clii cago Times last Saturday morning show that the corn crop will not be an average anywhere, and in many localities the farmers do not exp...

I VOL 4. SUMMED UP. In the Present Prepare for the Future— What Jameatown Will be Called Upon to Do. All Around and About Town on a Hnnt for Live Items of Gtoosip and Crood News. Prepare for the Future. From the Daily, Wednesday. While the business men of Jamestown have used every energy and employed every means in their power to promote the general interests of the town, it is now beyond the uncertainty of specula tion and conjecture that the facilities we now have and will probably be added, Jamestown will be far short of the de mand for tenement houses and transient accommodations that will be upon us when the tide of immigration comes pouring in upon us by the thousands next spring. Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois will pour in upon us thousands upon thousands of their surplus popula tion, while other states will follow with less numbers the tide of emigration to the northwest. It seems now a foregone and inevitable circumstance in the settlement of Dakota. The tide may or ma...

Dr. Ba'dwin had a close call from a runaway down Fourth avenue Sunday evening, but fortunately escaped without serious injury. He had just returned from a visit to young Smith, who shot himself, and left the team standing in front of the office, and started to take lus instruments in, when the team became restless and started. The doctor made an attempt to get hold of the lines and in doing so, partly regained his place in the buggy, but the seat turned back and left him in a very dubious situation on the rear end of the buggy with the team go ing down the street as if they were on a trial of speed at a cosmopolitan race. When the doctor saw there was no hope of regaining the lines ana stopping the team, he began making some lightning calculations as to how he could safely reach terra lirma, not that he feared deat...
