SUMNER. Mr. Sumner's present attitude to ward the administration, recalls to the minds of many that about the middle of Mr. Lincoln's first term he took equally strong ground against that administration. A Mother's Love. Children, look in those eyeslis ten to that dear voice, notice the feelins of even a single touch that is bestowed upon you by the gen tie hand. Make much of it, -while yet you have the most precious of all your good gifts a loving mother. Read the unfathomable love of those eves: the kind anxie ty of that tone and look, how ever slight your pain. In after life you may have friends, fond dear, kind, friends, but never will you have again the inexpressible love and gentleness lavished up on you, which none but a mother bestows. Often do I sigh, in my struggles with the hard uncaring world, for the sweet, deep securi ty I felt, when ol an evening, nest ling to her bosom, I listened to some quiet tale suitable to my age, read m her tender and untir ing voice. Never can 1 forget .her sweet glances cast upon me when I appeared to sleep ; never her kiss ol peaco at niglit ! Fireside Department. Take Hold and Lift. A teacbcr of the freedmen Tvas sitting at'lhe window of ber room, watching two negroes loading goods into a cart. One of them was dis posed to shirk; the other stopped, and looking sharply at the lazy one, said "Sam, do vou expect to go to heaven?' "Yes,'"-Then take hold and lift." There are a great many Christians in our churches and Sabbath schools who expect to go to heaven, that would do well to strengthen their hope of going there by taking hold and lifting some of the burdens which they let their bretheren bear alone.
