Kemble : -- Im complying with your request to be made acquainted with some of the most interesting facts relative to Calfornia, I shall, in the first piece attempt a brief outline of its political history, and subsequently give such other miscellaneous information as I have been able to collext during several years residence in the country as may appear to be worthy of your attention. From the first attempt of the Franciscan friars to establish Missions in Upper California,in 1769 until the downfall of the power of Spain in Mexico, the country was under ecclesiastical control. There was always, indeed, a commandant General, or Governor, appointed by the Viceroy of Mexico, whose authority was nominally absolute over all persons and things that did not appertain to the missions. He could in no respect interfere with these, but was obliged to afford them assistance whenever it was required. The last of the regal governors, Don Pablo Sola, left California in 182...

Texan Rhetoric.— A military officer at Saltillo, in a communication to one of the New Orleans papers, describes a tkaraeUr in the shape of a Texan colonel, living in the village of Sequin, who recommended certain landed property he was desirous to tell, in the following magniloquent and Ilaron-Durberly style: "Bay here, gentlemen, if you wish to make fortunes, here's the location for a magnanimous city ; hera at the foot of navigation.
