and one groped her several times, she said. One day in June 2001, she tried quitting. "I walked off the line," she said. "I couldn't take it anymore." Usher said a manager went after her and asked her to come back to work. He said he'd talk to one of the workers and would reprimand him, she testified. That manager, Peter Lootens, later testified that while he remembered persuading Usher to come back to work, he couldn't remember what had happened that made her want to quit. "I just don't remember what the incident was," said Lootens, who now works for Cracker Barrel in Davenport, Iowa. He said he did not file any report about what happened that day but men- tioned that the company has an "open-door" pol- icy form for employees if they have complaints. Usher first joined the Londonderry restaurant in 2000 under a different manager. In 2001, sev- eral managers were fired and a new team, includ- ing Lootens, was brought in. Lootens testified that while Usher was a com- petent grill coo...

friend of the court brief arguing that even though the organization believes in God and members take an oath to do their duty to God, it is not a religious organization. The American Civil Liberties Union sued San Diego and the Boy Scouts in August 2000 on behalf of a lesbian couple and an agnostic couple, each with scouting-age sons. They filed the law- suit after the City Council voted to extend the group's 50-year lease of Balboa Park camp space for another 25 years. In July 2003, U.S. District Judge Napoleon Jones Jr. sided with the plaintiffs, ruling that San Diego acted improperly when it leased 18 acres of camp space to the Scouts. The judge ruled that the group is a religious organization and the lease violated federal law that prohibits the govern- ment promotion of religion. Jones later ruled that the Scouts' lease with the city for a separate aquatics center at Fiesta Island in Mission Bay Park was also illegal. Mark Danis, an attorney for the plaintiffs, told the appeals...

Culture of intolerance afflicts schools, leads to hate crimes Most accepted form of bullying, other discrimination targets GLBT youth; students live in state of daily fear at hands of tormentors Eddie Bernice Johnson As violent crime continues to decrease in America, the rate of hate crimes remains on the rise. Young people represent a dispro- portionate percentage of both victims and perpetuators of hate violence. Young people are not born with these negative attitudes; therefore we must look at origins of these perceptions in order to prevent further hatred and vio- lence. We live in a culture where subtle forms of discrimination and bigotry are too often accepted. Sadly, one of the most common bastions where hateful attitudes develop is in our schools. Americans seem to accept taunting and teasing as a normal part of growing up. Parents, teachers and school administrators often turn a blind eye to this type of activity, rationalizing that kids will be kids, and this type of situa...

I ife+sty lebooks Star crossed TV host-turned-relationship-advisor blows a fuse when questions arise regarding the 'down low' phenomenon and her husband's sexual past By Daniel A. Kusner Life+Style Editor Star Jones writing a book about finding the ideal husband is like Anderson Cooper listing the best ways to score with hot chicks. Something just doesn't sound right. Star Jones added the last name Reynolds in 2004, exactly a year after she met A1 Reynolds, a handsome Wall Street banker, eight years her junior. After a brief romance, Reynolds proposed to "The View" co-hostess during halftime at a Lakers game in February 2004. And that's when the publicity machine kicked into gear. Star and A1 posed for countless couples por- traits. They even launched a website that's still up and running, StarandAl.com. But as the couple prepared for a lavish Manhattan wedding that rivaled the David Gest-Liza Minnelli nuptials, items about Al's sexuality began appearing in gossip columns — all beca...

scandal sweepstakes. With potential for a dra- matic film with elements of "Mystic River" and "Mysterious Skin," the documentary is power- ful as is. While Boston's Catholic Church is being rocked by revelations, in Toledo, Ohio, firefight- er Tony Comes moves his wife and two children into a new house, only to discover Dennis Gray, a former priest who molested him as a teenager, lives five doors down. The presiding bishop, who has covered up Gray's crimes, gives Comes the apology he demands but lies that no other allegations have been made against Gray. When he learns the truth, Comes goes public. He and three other vic- tims (one of them gay) discuss what Gray did to them and how it's affected their lives. As the film progresses, media exposure and stirring up old memories take their toll on Tony and his marriage. The bittersweet ending leaves you wondering what in God's name the church thought it was doing in giving Gray and priests like him continued access to children. Grade: B...

Waveform or formula? William Orbit sounds stuck in the 90s on long-awaited latest By Gilbert Garcia Pop Music Critic William Orbit "Hello Waveforms" Sanctuary Considering the brief shelf life of the average techno track, it's been a near eternity — six years — since William Orbit released a new recording. When we last left the ambient pioneer, he was re-mixing the work of Barber, Beethoven and Handel to surprising suc- cess on his classical homage album "Pieces in a Modern Style." Now that he's hopefully gotten past this overly-serious phase, Orbit has released "Hello Waveforms," an album that's far more in the producer's traditional vein. Fortunately or unfortunately for fans, the album is all-too-familiar for those who have fol- lowed Orbit's career. For those who still remem- ber the days of "Strange Cargo" and not just Orbit's remix work and production for Madonna, there's little on "Hello Waveforms" that won't sound stale. The album dwells almost exclusive- ly on the typical Or...
