2 OPINION HSU Brand March 4 1993 iiinrmwuuiujniimrrinni XZZXZ. Letter To The Editor Faculty Staff and Students of Hardin-Simmons- During the last two weeks of February another miraculous effort of theatrical blood sweat and tears took place in the Van Ellis Theatre. The School of Music and the Department of Theatre teamed up once again to create a music revue called RED PEPPERS PLUS by Noel Cow- ard. This evening of entertain- ment was chosen last August largely by the urging of yours truly. There were many who doubted if it would be any good if they wanted to do it all and some who decided did not see it. The wit and wisdom of Sir Noel Coward has always been close to my heart. The chance to perform this piece was humbling to all involved. This is tough stuff much more challenging on a stylistic level than on thesimple mindedness of LI'L ABNER last year. HSU Brand March 4 1993 OPINIONS 3 Editorial Comment I was driving my pick-up one afternoon dodging the other drivers while speeding to some unknown destination. I just love the way people drive in Abilene don't you? There are times when I wish I had a Star Trek "tractor beam" that could lift slow drivers out of my way and put them back down on the street behind me or even better "transport" them to a larger city right in the middle of rush hour traffic! But what am I thinking? I'm always in a hurry to get some- where I guess I need to slow down. (Nah!) Along these lines how many of you are in such a But far more important than my reverence for Mr. Coward's inestimable talents is my respect for the students who dedicated themselves to this artistic pur- suit. It goes without saying that we put in many hours on any production. We all have our doubts as we begin work on a new theatre piece as to its suc- cess or failure. We continue to make strides in the face of over- powering odds. W...

8 FEATURES EK World View By Sara Allsup One of the issues facing our nation today is the effort to determine how liberal our country is going to be. The main issue which is bringing this "liberalism" to the front pages of life is the issue of lifting of the ban on homo- sexuals in the military. During Clinton's cam- paign he supported gay rights and hence the gay commu- nity voted Clinton. Now that the election is over it is time for the President to follow through with his campaign promises. However the issue of gays being accepted into the mili- tary triggers acceptance na- tionwide. Lawyeractivist Bob Whightman stated in a recent issue of Newsweek "When Bill Clinton lifts the ban he is going to push na- tional acceptance of homo- sexuality. It's not just going to push people out of the closet in the military it's going to push people out of the closet all over thecountry. It's going to be OK to be a homosexual." This is the center of the controversy. If the ban is lifted homosexu...

12 FEATURES 2E5? Standing Firm By Jeff Armstrong Last week I was extremely busy and it was one of those days when you have so much to do that you don't know where to start. This just happened to be the day that the "dear" Mormons stopped by. Usually I would duck and hide so they would leave but the door just happened to be wide open and there was no escaping. I invited them in and they went through their whole presentation. I had worked in Utah all summer as a youth minister so I actually knew more than they did about Mormonism because they were still being trained. However what they said sounded so close to what I believed at first and they even quoted verses out of the Bible but I knew everything they were saying was out of line. Yet more and more people are being converted to Mormonism each day than any other religion. If you have followed the news lately then you know that in Waco people are actually willing to die and have died for this cult leader's cause. In their mind they m...

HSU Brand March 4 1993 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT 15 Hot Rod & Zim: Falling Down Can't Get Up Falling Down - Warner Bros. Synopsis: An ordinary man turns into a psychotic vigilante taking on all the annoyances of living life in Los Angeles. Steve Zimmer: Falls Falling Down a new film featuring the talent of Michael Douglas came with great po- tential but left many wanting something more at the end. This film centers around an interesting concept that is very relevant to our day and age. It deals with a man formally em- ployed by a defense plant who finally "loses" it and proceeds to go on an adventure dealing with everything from gangs to fast food restaurants. The adventure is rather off-the-wall but it makes for effec- tive entertainment. Humorper- vades many of these scenes such as in one scene where Dou- glas is in a fast food restaurant. The clerk denies his request for breakfast as breakfast service ended just two minutes before he came in. Douglas whips out a gun which ever...
