Page 8 SPORTS Wylie Baseball Team Scores Impressive Wins BY CHRISTI NALL Coach Sam Terry's Wylie Pirates are having little difficulty defeating some of the area's bet- ter baseball teams. Last week the Pirates turned back Allen, 7-5, and Terrell, 10-0 and 9-0, running their season record to 5-0. Four of the five wins have been shutouts, thanks to some strong pitching and defense. Wade Womack's fifth inning grand-slam was the big blow in the victory at Allen. Mark Watkins immediately followed with another round-tripper and Jason Brown also knocked one over the fence. Brown and Chuck Bowers combined for the pitching victory. The Pirates hosted Terrell's Tigers Saturday. Bowers pitched a three-hitter in the opener and was aided by an inside-the-park homer by Rick Green. Brown and Womack combined on a one- hitter in the nightcap. f ... Page 9 Question: Why is there so much confusion about salvation, and can we ever know what's right? I will agree that there is a lot of confusion about many spiritual matters. The religious world seems to be hopelessly dead- locked on what a person should or should not do in reference to salvation. The Bible talks about "a way which seemeth right unto a man, ^|but the end therof are the ways (Wof death." Proverbs 14:12. Spiritual confusion comes when we ignore God's teachings and listen to man's ideas and opin- ions. We can know what is right as we turn to the Bible. The animal sacrifices of the Old Testament law (Mosaic) were insufficient to take away sins. Hebrews 10:1-4: "For the law hav- ing a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? Because that the worshippers once purged would have h...

Page 14 Feature Section A father's gift to his children By Willard Abraham, Ph.D. Copley News Service Q. We so often hear that when it comes to a gift it is "the thought" that counts and not the cost in- volved. Let me give you a wonder- ful example of that. I am one of four children in our family, now all grown and mar- ried, with families of our own. My father began a practice before each of us was born of writing and collecting items for a personalized "book" for each of us. Comments about us, our family, and current events, clippings, and pictures are all carefully collect- ed in large three-ringed note- books. I'm the oldest, and be made it into my fifth one, with lesser quantities for my younger broth- ers and sister. His writing is clear and so are his thoughts. His political ideas are stated with pride and as a challenge to each of us, and his love (which he fortunately shared abundantly while he was still liv- ing) seems to spill off almost C R 0 S S W 0 R D ACROSS 30. The $300,000 to $400,000 is expected to take care of the study, exploratory work and repairs. It is believed a number of lines have collapsed in the older section of Sachse, as when they were laid some were not placed on sand or pea gravel and have been in disrepair for a number of years. In other action, Peggy Strong and Richard Ramirez were ap- pointed adult softball league coordinators. The Council also agreed to let bids for the con- struction of a pavilion and to ap- prove ball field use fees and reservation policies. Considering a grandfather clause to permit swine to be kept in the city, the Council agreed to allow swine for a period of five years on property annexed by Sachse. Permits will be required and certain requirements must be met. The Council agreed to amend charges for setting water meters (see chart on page 2). They ag...

Page 8 SPORTS Wylie Baseball Team Off and Running - Again! Coach Sam Terry has his Wylie High School baseball team off and running--the same verse to an old tune. Prior to Tuesday's game at Rockwall, the Pirates were 9-0 and Terry, in his 10th year as baseball coach, had improved his record to 181-50. The Pirates have been in the playoffs seven of the last nine years and were district champions five times. "We reached the final four in 1982, made it to the quarterfinals in 1979 and 1983, and went to re- gional twice and area twice," Terry said. "We've never lost an opening playoff game." What is even more remarkable about this year's team is that the Pirates have taken on bigger schools. "I like to play good teams in non-district games," Terry explained. "That makes it easier for us when district com- petition starts." Strong pitching and defense have been the key to the Pirates' success thus far. Jason Brown and Chuck Bowers are the two mainstays of the pitching staff. Both were al...
