OPENING OF HOTEL KURRAJONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION BALL. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 November 1926

OPENING OF HOTEL KURRAJONG : I TENN J 8 ASSOCIATION BALL. > \ J The annual ball of the Canberra Tennis As sociation took place at Hotel Kurrajong on Friday, 29th October, and this entertainment had, as an added interest, the official opening of the Main Hall of this new and spacious hostel. Perhaps the City of Canberra has never before witnessed Mich an entirely representa tive gathering of some four hundred of its most active citizens, which embraced those of the Administrative, Professional, and Commer cial interests. Approaching the foyer from a well-graded and ample car drive entrance, the visitor was instantly impressed by the extraordinarily well arranged lighting scheme, altogether brilliant and effective, though rather searching. So also was the dancing hali a picture to look upon. This is well set with timber of a sombre tint, the preparation of which is a standing testimony of excellence to those experts re sponsible therefor. A very fortunate feature of this ballroom -...

CANBERRA GUN CLUB PROPOSED FORMATION [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 November 1926

CANBERRA* GUN CLUB There are a number of enthusiastic "shots" in Canberra who have recently suggested that a Gun Club should be formed here. Trap shooting is an invigorating and humane sport, which is rapidly growing in popularity in Australia, the £5.000 World Championship held in Melbourne last week being proof of this fact. Enthusiasts desirous of linking up with the proposed club should get into touch with Mr. S. J. Senior, c/o the Universal Distributing Company, Eastlake. As soon as the necessary support is given to the movement, an automatic trap will be procured, and also the necessary target discs. Mr. Senior proposes to convene a meeting at an early date, with a view to the forma

CYCLING PROPOSED CLUB AT CANBERRA. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 November 1926

CYCLING PROPOSED CLUB AT CANBERRA. As numerous requests have been recently received for the formation of a Cycle Club at Canberra, it is proposed to hold a meet ing for this purpose at the Social Service Building, Acton, at 8 p.m., on Monday next, 15th November. There are some champion riders in and around Canberra from New South Wales and other State, including George Staples, who was at one time considered to be a prospec tive world champion. About thirty riders have intimated their intention of joining up with the new Club when formed, and as there are probably 1,000 cycles in Canberra and Queanbeyan at the present time, the* mem bership of the Club should soon reach the hundred mark. It is also proposed to form a Club at Queanbeyan at an early date. Mr. J. H. Tooteil is taking the initiative regarding the formation of a Club in Can il erra, and he has already received promises of every support from the League of New South Wales Wheelmen, and the necessary sup port in prizes, etc...

DIGGER DOINGS [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 November 1926

DIGGER DOINGS (By "Bigger M.") 1st Dig. : Did you go to the Smoko on the 15th at the Causeway 2 2nd Dig.: Ves. Jt was a good show. 1st Dig.: Did YOU get any glasses? 2nd Dig.: No, the war babies got down on them. The committee has taken a tumble. No more war babies or those who were never ' ? there ' ' are to be admitted to future 4 k Smoko 's. '' All Diggers will have to wear their badges or returned medals. Outsiders who buy tickets do so at their own risk. It eost the committee a fiver for glasses; that's not playing the game. Bert .Jackson went to Melbourne to repre sent us at Federal Congress; we expect him to announce that we are a braneh with full State rights at the dinner on Armistice night. Commissioner Butters and Mr. Rowe gave fome very sound advice to the Diggers at the Smoko, who were told to stand and play the game, and we would be strongly supported in the right direction. Every Digger in the Territory must wear a poppy to-day. The ladies' night was very successful, ...

CANBERRA SOCIAL SERVICE ASSOCIATION FIRST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. CONSTITUTION SUBSTANTIALLY AMENDED. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 November 1926

«-««?«-M-»»-»»-»-»»» .< »» M m-.»»-»»-.HI»«-M-.m-». CANBERRA SOCIAL SERVICE ASSOCIATION FIRST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. CONSTITUTION SUBSTANTIALLY AMENDED. li Those gentlemeu of England now abed Should count themselves accurst they are not here."-Shakespeare (Avon). This Shakespearian sentiment, with a little of the sting extracted, aptly describes the un fortunate fat? of those who, for reasons good or ill, stayed away from one of the most vital events in the history of the capital-the first general meeting of the Canberra Social Ser vice Association, held at Acton Hall on Thursday, 21st October. Mr. J. C. Bracken reg, president, occupied the chair, supported by Mr. J. H. Butters, Mr. H. R. Waterman, and Mr. J. H. Honeysett (General Secretary). A goodly number of citizens-indeed, the cream, of the city's citizenship, as one said attended, and great interest was taken in the proceedings, the main matters dealt with being the amendment of the constitution, and the appointmen...

ANCIENT ORDER OF FORESTERS. JUVENILE COURT BANQUET AND CONCERT. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 November 1926

ANCIENT ORDER OP FORESTERS. JUVENILE COURT BANQUET AND CONCERT. Children of all ages, some with whiskers, others as bald as a new-born baby, but all as merry as a monkey among the peanuts, crowd ed to the Acton Hall on Friday night, Octo ber 15, when the Juvenile Court of this popu lar and powerful Lodge entertained itself and its friends in royal and Forester fashion. Mr. Mark Heselden (president), Mrs. Heselden (secretary);, and a committee of zealous Foresters, upheld the banner of mirth with victorious energy throughout, and sent this joyous juvenile fun-Ailed function merrily and hilariously along to its melodious end. Members of the Order, all looking regal and brilliant in their spring-suggesting regalia, lent an accentuated effect to the other charm ing flag and floral decorations, the varied view being highly pleasing to fte artistic eye, while the singing and fte speeches that gemmed fte flying hours were almost as bril liant as fte sashes in which nearly every mem ber of ...

CAMP NOTES [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 November 1926

CAMP NOTES (By "Gleaner.") Talk about financial wizards! Land whick cost the Federal Government £3 10s per acre for the freehold is now leased to workmen for £52 per acre per annum, and all the improve ments that the Commission has put on to jus tify this charge is to lay a three-quarter inch water-pipe on the blocks. I would suggest that much better results, and of a permanent nature, would accrue if the Commission would subdivide the grazing areas within a radius of eight miles from Parliament House, with blocks averaging three acres each, and let them on a lifetime tenancy for £10 a year, including water and light. In this way trades men and others would be encouraged to be come permanent residents, as they would al ways have a home, and enough land to keep the wolf from the door when unemployed. As wood is a scarce and dear and scarce commodity, would the Commission supply elec tricity to the various camps and messes for cooking and heating, as well as for light? When are the op...

W^^WW 1 BM«»-MT i IM MM-"»MB EU i"?iiMa»'-»HM ? i WiT Perhaps it is difficult to bring oneself to establish this rather dull and monotonous daily life for one's babe, but it will prove to be simply full of interest and good results. Pond and foolish over-indulgence, mismanagement and "spoiling" can be as harmful to a baby as neglect or cruelty. If we are firm and Vis»-_,_ strict in the beginning we shall have the kind of children everybody loves. CHILD WELFARE IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS. Realising the urgent necessity for the con sideration of tlie welfare of women and young children, the Council of the Canberra Social Service Association appointed a sub-commit tee, consisting of Messrs. McNamara, Honey sett, and Coy, to formulate a scheme for the establishment of health centres and baby clinics at Canberra. During the past month meetings of women residents have been held at Ainslie, Cause way, Molonglo and Eastlake, and in each of these centres strong local committees have been elected, as weil as. delegates, to the cen tral Health Society Council.
