DEATH OF DR. HEBER, Lord Bishop     of Calcutta.-We have this week the   melancholy duty to record in our columns     the death of this very eminent and learned prelate, who died suddenly, on the 30th of April, in his bath, at Trichinopoly. The unwelcome news was brought by H. M. sloop of war, Captain Wetherall, which   arrived at Sydney on the 5th ultimo   from Madras the 4th of June. The loss   will be most severely felt not only throughout India, but in these Colonies,   the most remote of his most extensive   diocese, in which Bishop Heber took a   deep interest, more particularly in the   moral and religious instruction of the   young. To promote these benevolent   views he had intended to honour us with   an early visit, which had Providence so willed it, might have prolonged to the wo...

TRIAL OF THE MURDERERS OF THE LATE MR. SIMPSON. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 2 September 1826

TRIAL OF THE MURDERERS OF THE LATE MR. SIMPSON. On Friday evening, the 25th ultimo, was concluded   the trial of William Smith, Thomas Dunnings, Edward Everett, and Benjamin Morris, for the willful murder of   Mr. Alexander Simpson, at Pittwater, on the 8th No- vember last. The information charged the prisoners, in   some counts, with perpetrating the crine by strangling,     in others by cutting the throat. The circumstances of   this most horrible murder were stated in our Journal at   the time, and will be in the recollection of our Readers The deceased occupied two houses at Pittwater, distant about half a mile from each other ; in one of which he took his meals, and in the other slept. At the latter place he kept a shop; and the unfortunate gentleman was in the habit, after taking tea, of going down at dusk to his shop, in which he allowed no one to sleep but himself. On the evening of th...
