A Curious Charge. OF SELLING MORTGAGED SHEEP. BUNGENDORE, Thursday. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 31 October 1891

A Curious Charge. OF SELLING MORTGAGED SHEEP. ' BrjNGBiTOORH, Thursday. A resident of the town named Jas. H, Smith, who lately has been follow ing the avocation of sheep-dealing, waB yesterday, on bail, charged before Messrs. Price and Bull, J.'sP., with selling mortgaged sheep, at Quean bcyan. Mr. Gannon appeared for the defence, and Mr. A. H. Garraway for the prosecution. The evidence disclosed the fact that accused purchased some sheep from A. M. Dalhunty, the well known auctioneer of Queanbeyan, for which he gave bills, the seller accepting a stock mortgage over the sheep. When the first bill came back for renewal prosecutor told Smith that the money would have to be paid or the mortgage must be handed over. Accused said Mr. George Gale (then auctioneer in Bungendore) had sold the sheep and had his money. Some of the sheep were sold in Goulburn, some in Sydney, and some to the local resident. Accused stated he had had no money and not a single sheep out of the transaction. Prose...

Municipal loans do not appear to be very successful at present. The New castle Council wanted £74,000 at 4 per cent. Only £6000 was offered. The ' London Times,' in comment ing upon the political situation in New Soutli Wales, says that Mr. Dibbs is inclined to trust labour back to a sub sidiary position. His policy will test the independence of the labour party. The, Hospital Saturday and Sunday collections in Melbourne last week gained £5625, which is considerably less last year. Tlie decrease is attri buted to general depression. Mr. Dibbs in his manifesto, states that large additional revenue must be raised and that after full consideration Ministers are convinced that immediate resort must be had to the Customs for the great bult of the necessary new revenue. This may be considered protection with a vengeance. The argument appears to be that as times are bad they will bo improved by in creased prices for everything. IMPORTANT.
