THE INTERIOR.-A gentleman who ar- rived in town yesterday morning, after riding some hundred miles through the bush, in- forms us that the country is suffering fearfully from want of rain. The pasturage is com- pletely burned up in many localities, and the cattle are already dying on stations for want of water. He has -known it lately necessary to drive stock for miles to a water-hole. During Iiis route he witnessed some extensive bush fires, and lind a narrow escape himself, having, when on the Loddon, to make a hard run to get clear of the pursuing flames. The settlers are earnestly praying for rain, and if the present scorching weather continues the most lamentable consequences must ensue. Ibid. '

THE EMPIRE. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1851. THE HUNDRED-GUINEA PATRIOTS OF MELBOURNE. [Newspaper Article] — Empire — 15 February 1851

:;rí,;iHE EMPLEE. SATURDAY,. FEBRUARY 15, 1851. THE HUNDRED-GUINEA PATRIOTS OF MELBOURNE. NOTHING is more" cheaply done than to speak out our patriotism at a public meet- ing j and on no other occasion, perhaps, do men feel tho seductive influences around and about them so subtly and ir rcsiptibly. Mighty brave words will be charmed out of a precipitate orator by the plaudits of a thousand of his fellows. But stop till tho ductile multitude is dis- persed j and then pursue the self-satisfied haranguer to his quiet home, and put before him a subscription paper ! "Ay, there's the rub!". If he "took no note of time," , on the platform, assuredly he had no thought of this thing. The height and depth of his Sparton virtue are now brought to the test. He gave you a thousand gaudy words, and was still ready to give ; but he hesitates, and his patriotic face pales, at giving you one'goldcn guinea. Thecitizens of the city of Melbourne, in their anti-transportation movements, have displayed t...
