Parsons (Government Resi- dent)/ Mr. Pater (Stipendiary Magis- trate), and families, and also Mr. Beresford' (Crown Prossentor), sailed fiom here yesterday in the E. and A. Company's, .steamer Menmuir . on Satiirday last. ,. - : Early this week two dreadful and fatal cases of burning occurred, one at Thebarton resulting in the death of a married woman named Briggs, and one at Gawler, where a Mrs. Healey lost her life. An Adelaide solicitor named Degenhardt has been committed for trial for indecently assaulting a little girl only six years old. The Australian cricketers have arrived all well in London. A rather severe earthquake has just been experienced in the eastern comities of England. GENERAL MISCELLANY. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. In the case of Henry Drew, who was recently committed for trial on a charge of arson, and is suspected of liaving caused numerous tires in" the eastern suburbs, the Crown Solicitor, under the advice of the Chief Justice, has entered a NOLLE PROSEQUI. Drew has been dis- charged until the police can obtain further evidence. The Central Board of Health are tak- ing action in the matter" of the filthy state of the miner's cottages at the Walleroo copper mines. The revenue returns for the third quarter of the financial year have been issued. The gross receipts amounted to £547,856, a decrease of £31,679. The total revenue for the nine months reached £1,514,561, a decrease of £63,815. There is a decrease in thc customs of £'25,000 for the quarter, and £65,000 for the nine months ; and a decrease is shown in the receipts from land sales £35,000 for the quarter, and £70,000 for the nine months. FRIDAY EVENING, MAY 2. DEATH OF MB. JOSEPH SKELTON. THE sad news of the death of Mr. Joseph Skelton, proprietor of the NORTHERN TERRITORY TIMES & GAZETTE, was wired from Sydney on Saturday morning last, and was soon spread over the whole township, causing gloom wherever it went. For many months past the deceased gentleman had been ailing with an internal affliction, and for eleven or twelve weeks prior to his departure for the South he had not been outside his door, in fact rarely up from bis bed. As he showed no signs of rallying, the trip to a colder part was thought worth a trial, and upon Mr. Skelton stating his willingness to act upon this suggestion, arrangements were made accordingly, the deceased and Mrs. Skelton proceeding to Sydney in the s.s. Whampoa on the 17th of March last.
