The Straggle for Right. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 28 April 1900

The Straggle for Right. With the beginning of the present war in South Africa, some 'moral' capitalist papers began to moralise over the affair from a singular vulgar viewpoint, and have kept it up ever since. Their line of argument is this : ' It matters not whether the Boers or whether the English are right. Say the Boers are ; even then every humane man must wish them to be speedily de feated. The power of England is tremendous : that of the Boers is insignificant in comparison. They are bound to lose. The sooner they lose the less will the effusion of blood be at an end. Humanity demands the defeat of the Boers.' Such reasoning insinuates the quintessence of vulgarity land immorality in human action. We shall not here waste much space on the fact that what has been taken .for ' tremendous power ' more than once has gone down before what was taken for insignificance tin comparison. Nor care we to make much of the fact that the point happens to have been illustrated by the very ra...

A Lie Nailed. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 28 April 1900

R Lie Nailed. The Vorwacrts, the chief organ of Social-Democracy in the world, publishes a letter from a Social Democratic German workman in Johannesburg, in the course of which the following sentence oc curs : ' The clamor about the i 11 troatiiient of foreigners is abso lutely unfounded. Nowhere has the workers of tbe 'population fared better than in the Trans vaal. The question of the fran chise could have been regulated, with a turn of the hand if the Knglish 'capitalists had not stood in the way with their incessant provocation. All that the Eng lish capitalists want is t; possess themselves of the goldfieldsof the Transvaal.'

The Brutal Boer. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 28 April 1900

The Brutal Boer. The following is an extract from a letter, dated Ladysmith, January 7, 1900, from a Royal Army Medical Corps officer : ' One of the Boer medical officers rode into us under a Red finer unH asked ns to pnand bury our dead, which, of course, we did. But the sight of those poor fellows lying on the hill, some of them dreadfully riddled with bullets, I can never forget. The Boers were very good, in | fact, one would hardly have thought they were enemies. They talked to us quite freely, and helped us to dig the graves, and to carry our dead. There was one very touching incident. After our major, had read the burial service one of the Boers stepped ' out and said a short prayer, hoping the war would soon end, and while we stood with heads uncovered, they sang a hymn in Dutch. It cut our fellows up very much indeed, in fact, we could hardly speak for .-rune time.''

"SMILER" ON FAKE. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 28 April 1900

' SMILER ' ON FAKE. 'SMILER ' Hales, Westralian war correspondent in Sonth Africa, writes to the Sun from Enslin : ' Since 1 wrote you last things have been very quiet here. As a matter of fact, L hive a good grin when I see the Cape papers, and the English papers as well. Nine-tenths of the stuif one reads therein is arrant ' fake.' I have entered into a combination with a reliable man at each of the fighting centres on the fol lowing lines : I supply them with bona-fide news from this part, and they in return drop me notes of what really transpires in their quarters. Fully three-fourths of of the cable matter is utter rot ; so do not pin your faith to your pet ' rag ' when you pick it up with your morning coffee and buttered roll. I used to think that the Coolgardie mining ex pert was THE MOST AWFUL LIAR that this country has produced, but not now. Bless his simple soul, he was a mere novice in the art of 'dodging the truth and lighting on lies compared to the man who manufactures...

The politician who belongs to capitalism, whether in Parliamen tarv or Municipal politics, can't get bevond that idea of mere mon keying wiih public concemp. 'Io act seriously in an honest direction would mean pecuniary loss to in dividual . apitalists, would mean interfering with the sacred rights of proprrty— a thing to be depre cated. by all ' right thinking ' people 'I bat's evidently how Mavor Miller of Newcastle and a number of his fir lowers view matters, ac cording to .their atttitude at th-« plague meeting on Tuesday even ing last, Mr, Ranclaud opened p oceed ings (the conveners of the meeting were not present), and, after moving an adjournment, orated lengthily on the desirability of killing the rats. That was the one .. thing which -eemed to demand the nation's attention — to save our selves we must develope into a na tian of rat kiileis. JOTTINGS. Making History. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 28 April 1900

JOTTIX; rS. [From the Sanctum.] Making History. I The resolutions of the late I Conference give a special interest I to the May Day celebrations of I this year. It is fitting that the I opening year of the century that 1 is to se* the final overthrow of 1 capitalism an 1 the birth of the 1 Co - operative Commonwealth M should witness the birth of the B Socialist Labor Party — a party I that is destined to ultimately I control, for the working classed, the whole governmental forces of Australia. The People occu pies the proud position of jour nalistic mouthpiece of that Party ; it is. moreover, the property 'of the party. The coming May Day issue of The People will, therefore, present an appropriate occasion for the publication of a concise history of the Socialist press from the first issue in 1894; and it will prove auch a history as no other paper in the Austra lasian colonies can boast. A Word for tbe Women. In the report of the General Executive to the annual Confer- si ence the...
