MR NANGUS'S NUGGS'S LETTER TO HIS PAPPA. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 25 March 1870

MR NANGUS NUGOS'S LETTER TO HIS PAPPA. Well now I've little time to spare, a letter home I'll write, yet still I scarce know what to say, or how such to indite ; for since I wrote to you Pappa, I've been up in the bush, and now I find I'm up a tree for I've been on the lush I think I told you all about our councillors great and small, from the new one at Smmaria right through to MIr Hall; so this time I must paes the gents and something give instead, about Don Rastrix's epsom salts, and the Dutch volocipede. A thousand wheels it has within and only to,, without, thero's two behind, and three in front, with others all about; sixty miles an hour it goes, with greatest of all ease ; no steam, no pump, no handles there; and sit on as you please. In front it has a dragon's head, behind a curly tail; on either tido its massive claws and eyes will make one quall. The singular way by which it works, II try and make you see, and explain the wihole to you as it was told to me. Tihe thousand w...

SHOCKING ACCIDENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 25 March 1870

SHOCKING ACCIDENT. Late on the evening of the 11th inst., a man named James Jefferies, a visitor to the races, was passing a hut near the racecourse kept by a man named Murphy, when he dismounted to get a drink of water. On mounting again he found that the rein had become unbuckled and that he had only one in his hand. Knowing his mare to be a bolter, and as she started to go down a sharp declivity from the hut, he leaned forward to catch hold of the loose rein, in doing which he -overbalanced himelf and fell off, still retaining hold of the one rein. The mare being fidgety, in some way trod on his ankle, and when he rose and attempted to stand on it he fell, exclaiming, " my leg is in two." Murphy and his wife at once went to his assistance, and found, upon cutting the boot off, that the man had actually been attempting to stand on the end of the bone of his leg, which pro truded through the flesh, the foot being displaced and turned solo upwards. They lost no time in bringing him ...
