The Black Hand of Labor. HOW THE 'STANDARD' FIGHTS. From the 'Daily Standard' of Tuesday ! last: — 'The poison of sectarianism is being sown broadcast. PRICE OF PETROL. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 19 January 1917

PRICE OF PETROL. There are probably few -munitions of war of more importance than petrol, and it, therefore, must have been gratifying to newspaper readers to learn, a few weeks ago, that there was a shortage of that commodity in Germany. Unfortu nately, that country is not the only one in 'which the scarcity of petrol lis being felt: :In Great Britain a Petrol Control Committee takes stringent measures to ensure that none of that class of oil is wasted, supplies being issued to holders of licences issued by the committee. Tlie London 'Grocer' of a recent date says: 'It has been (hinted that iin the near future there will be a better supply of petrol, but we fear that there is very little prospect of it yet awhile. The sub stitutes which have been introduced here, unfortunately, in many cases, have shown a rise in price. It is, therefore, impera tive, now that petrol-dr&ven motors have become part of our commercial life, that the Board of Trade and the Petrol Con trol Commit...

LABOR'S AIM. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 19 January 1917

LABOR'S AIM. So the aim of Labor is to capture and keep control of Parliament, is it? Of course that means that the unions, or the extreme section of the unions, are to capture and control the Parliaments of Australia. Naturally, they conslider they are quite justified in capturing and controlling Parliament for the benefit of one section of the community. That being so, can they gainsay the right of the returned soldiers to endeavor to cap ture and control Parliament, or to at ?least organise to that end. There are, or were, 300,000 men in the Australian Expeditionary Forces, the bulk of whom will return to Australia. There may be 350,000 before the war is ended. With such a force to back it up, any returned soldiers' organisation would be justified in claiming a big vdi'ce in the government of this great Commonwealth. Returned men of Australia, follow the example of the Returned Soldiers and Patriots' National Political League, and Get into Politics, for by politics alone can you ...

During the past few months especially, le clamor in Great Britain has become ' too general and pronounced for the authorities to disregard, and it is quite on the cards that ere long official maxi mum quotations for many necessary commodities will be issued. The rate for sugar has, of course, been officially fixed for some months past. Some little time , back a 'Departmental Committee' was appointed in the -homeland to 'investi- gate the principal causes which ihave led to the increase of prices of commodities of general consumption — since the be ginning of tlie war, and to recommend such steps, if any, with a view to amelior ating the situation as appear practicable and expedient, having regard to the necessity of maintaining adequate sup plies.'...
