Algerian Oats. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 13 November 1903

Algerian Oats. 1 A few days ago we were shown a splendid sample of Algerian oats that came off the land owned by Mr. H. C. Perren, junr. The sample under review was from 5 to 6 feet hi;jh, and was in earing equal to c ats grown elsewhere. This is only another evidence of the suitability of the soil in and arouid Xambour for ag ricultural purposes.

A Unique Subscription T List. We lud handed to us last week a subscription list in aid of the Children's Hospital. The list belongs to the Woom bve State School, and the ' get up' is somewhat novel and; should v ot fail to elicit sym pathy fo ? the institution. In the ceut-e of the list is a print of one of the inmates, a ! pupil of the Woombye school, and surr mnding this are the autograplis and tiny subs, of four scorA of his little friends at home, while the amount subscribed is very creditable. Of coursd we jcould not refuse, nor do ye think there are many who will.

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 13 November 1903

To the Editor. Sir, — 'Old Chum' has waged war for some time against cricketers vrho differ f on himself in the way the Sabbath should be kept. Now, each man's idea of the requirements of our Creator is in keeping with his idea of (kid. The more limited a man's pov er in the direction of vrhat is infinite, the more limited is his idea of C tod, and it is a matter of fact that such men may make very harsh demands in Sabbath keeping. Our God, is in my opinion, a most merciful and reasonable God, who 0 lly requires reasonable forenoon p ravers and afternoon recreation. This is in keeping with my reason which God has given me. I atta( h no blame to the man who differs from me, as he is no doubt acting in obedience to the dictates of his conscience. The only reasoi I object to 'Old Chum's' stnetures is that I fail to see what rijht he has to dictate to the community generally (or part thereof) as to how they should spend their Sunday. I claim to be a fairly old cricketer myself, and come...

Tj the Editor. Sir, — Wi 1 you permit me through the columi s of your valuable paper to point ? )ut several wilful and malicious i lis-statements made by a person yclept Brittain at the last meeting of the Maroochy Shire Council. '. am fully seir.ed of the fact that the in significance sometimes of an accuser is sufficient to warrant one iu trea ting with contempt any statements he may mske ; yet again there are occasions when the contemptil -le brevity of the accuser's intellect is eclipsed by the serious ness of the accusation. I opine this is one ol them, and is the only apology 1 1 ran offer myself for thus honouring Mr. S. J. Brittain by noticing h m In your last very complete report of the business before the council Mr. S. J. Brittain is credited with saying: '.Mr. 'Walters b; d rlready made sufficient encroach.11 ent on the road as the fence whic h ran down to the river was then taking--, iu about half a chain of tl e road.' TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 13 November 1903

To the Editor. Sir, — I notice by \-our report of the proceedings of the Maroochy Shire Council that there was quite an outburst of vituperation hurled at myself by certain councillors, the reason being that I did not sign' the lease of the Council's property to :.Mr. G. L. Burv, and in conse quence they were under the ne cessity of appointing another per son to do this business. One ven erable councillor went so far as to say I was dishonourable. I would suggest that he might call to his re membrance a conversation which took place in his store, when he said that the lessee of this land had ; 'had' the Board over this trans- j action ; and he then afterwards j comes to a meeting and pretends I to be offended because the said ! lease was not signed a mouth pre- i viously. I can only say that such , conduct is quite in keeping with the man. As to Mr. Bury's re- j marks re my other actions, I must ; say I do not know what he refers . to. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 13 November 1903

To the Editor. Sir, — The public may chiefs thank you tor the boon of the Thursday half-holiday, thus doing away with the temptation of play ing cricket on Sundays. ' Gub,' as you.are aware, never advocated the latter ; mv remarks were as to differences. I have at last run ' Hum' to earth as to his assump tion of logic. I fear he cannot pass where the middle term is pur posely left out for him to fall through. So had 'Hum' any log ical knowledge, would he not at once have noticed absence of fact with avidity ? I submit it is near a ' culminate in crime' when he in cites anyone to prove the righteous ness &c, after denouncing the practice. That culminates in in consistency. I am glad to observe ' Hum's' style is better, for he no longer dallies with savages iu the shade to loose the tresses of Malli colo's hair. Perhaps- the moderate fee of a half-penny bun to a very young person has secured him. As to ' traver' ? if he has not again misquoted, then the author of 'Vesfiges fr...
