A Bit of the Truth The most pertinent and startling question over asked is this: — ' What is truth)' A. Roman Governor propounded it once, under circumstances which greatly worried and perplexed his official mind. And he was not the first man or the last — not by myriads. , So far as I know there has been no satisfactory answer. Some people (radi cals and come-outers of various sorts) fancy that in I his, tbu tail end of a rather brag gart and conceited century, they have flushed a fair-sized covey of truths by firing specnlu tive shot-guns into every wayside bush and bog But have they done it ? No, gentle reader, no. They have pnt up crows and sparrows, the same crows that picked tho bones of the cavo dwellers, and the snme sparrows that sold two for a farthing in the time of Filnte. There were plenty of fools of old, and there are plenty, now. The ancient doctors, indeed, prescribed some horrible stuffs as medicine: — they used electuaries of viper's flesh and recommended homegran...

High-Class Dairying. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 16 June 1899

High-Class Dairy insr. It is oftentimes thought that if a young man has received a liberal education, and has had more than ordinary advan tages in the way of self improvement, he has hidden his talents tf he engages in the vocation of dairying. The fact is, however, that there is no business in ac tive life where a wider range of study, research, and investigation is more profit able or more needed than in dairying. His business entire is that of the scient ist and chemist. He is in charge of one cf the finest laboratories. Occasionally we see a dairyman who attempts to con duct a dairy on scientific lines without the good sound judgement that must enter into the management of all successful business. His failure is the cause of much raillery at the so-called book farming. The axiom that ' In wisdom there is strength,' is just as truo of farming as anything else, and he who best prepares himself for his life's work, all other things being equal, will attain groator success. Too muc...

Holt's Flat. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 23 June 1899

Bolt's Flat From our own Correspondent. Political matters are undergoing a slight revival owing to tho Federal campaign tak ing place on Tuesday, and our reeidentsare partially arousing themselves from their morbid lethargy to exercise a vote on this occasion on acoount of the national ques tion at issue. Doubtless before this ap pears in print the ballot box will declare the plebeacite of the people of this colony on Federation. As hitherto out here a number of eleotors are deprived of their franchise by having lost or mislaid their voting slips. This, palpably, shows the unworkable state of the Electoral Act in ihis respect, and it is to be hoped that the Aot will be amended at least m so far as an eleotor should have the privilege of voting if his name is on the roll, by mak ing an affidavit on the day of the election to a magistrate that he had lost his Bight. Great .rivalry exists at Nimitybelle amongBt hare dealers, and drives are pro moted every Saturday, at which buyers roll...

The Perthshire. PICKED UP BY THE UNION COMPANY'S STEAMER TALUNE. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 23 June 1899

The Perthshire' PICKED UP BY THE UNION COM PANY'S STEAMER TALUNE. The eteawer Talune picked up the Perthshire on Tuesday last after a long journey of between six and seven hundred milea. Towing was com menced, but the weather -was most unfavourable^ fierce winds and dan* gerous seas imperilled the vessels from time to time. Tbe Talune stood the Btrufn splendidly, and brought the Perthshire safely to port at seven o'clock this morning after one of the most wonderful feats of towing ever known in shipping annals. It is roughly estimated that the salvage will amount to about £20,000, of whioh amount the captain of the Tal une 1b entitled to one sixth. All hands on board the Perthshire are partic ularly well and happy, and the vessel is not a wit worse' for her experience. The Perthshire anchored off Neutral Bay . about 7 o'clock this morning. She was the object of special interest .by passengers in the ferry boats Coming early to town, who cheered the Talune lustily. It appears that th...
