TOWN PLANNING. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 March 1914

TOWN PLANNING. ', The Town Planning Association anticipates placing various matters before the Premier within a short time now. It has been decided to hold an exhibition of poster designs at Easter time. On the evening of April 8, the Hon. Secretary (Mr. G. A. Taylor), is to speak in the Royal Society's House on: 'Canberra, To-day and To-morrow.' The lecture will be illustrated with special sketches and — for the first time — natural-colored photo graph slides, with special artistic effects by a new light transmittor. To count these days is to 'get there.' Chas. Benson counts His recent appointment to the managership of The Ornamental Steel Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Sydney, was well merited, and time, we are sure, will show it well justified. The Colonel Vernon Scholarship Memorial. Over £500 in hand. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 March 1914

The Colonel Vernon Scholarship Memorial. Over £500 in hand. The memory of Col. Vernon, architect and soldier, is to be perpetuated by the establishment of a 'Col. Vernon Memorial Scholarship for Architecture and Town Planning.' This was decided upon by a recent public meeting which was in enthusiastic accord with the proposi tion. Energetic committees are now furthering the project, and, as the result of well-organised effort and a responsive public, subscriptions to the fund are satisfactorily piling up, as on overleaf. The response is not alone confined to military and pro fessional circles. Merchants and the public gener ally, who benefited by the citizen services of the late distinguished gentleman, are displaying eager ness to assist in the creation of this well-merited and rational memorial. The movement is one of those public-spirited efforts that had its inspiration in the life of the Colonel — a life that was itself public-spirited in it& citizen, architectural and ...

L.G. CLERKS AND A UNION. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 March 1914

L.G. CLERKS AND A UNION. The Local Government Clerks' Association dis cussed in camera, on Friday evening, the advisable ness, or otherwise, of forming an industrial union. A circular issued in. connection with the meeting said : — 'For the benefit of country members it may be stated that this project has been discussed casually among the members for some time, past. Recent events, however, have made it- a matter to be seriously considered. The Municipal Employees' Union have lately drawn up a log for an award which Avill give the workmen, in some cases, salaries equal to those clerks are receiving. The sanitary inspectors have formed a union, and it is only to be expected that through the courts they will obtain increased salaries, and the question arises, What position will Town and Shire Clerks be in if some similar action be not taken? 'By some it is contemplated that the increases above foreshadowed will be balanced by a corres ponding retrenchment in salaries paid to the offic...

BRUNSWICK'S DELAYED OPPORTUNITY. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 March 1914

? : ? o ? BRUNSWICK'S DELAYED OPPORTUNITY. Brunswick Council (V.) is showing a splendid. Australian spirit, but tempered, unfortunately, with a little petty spite. Some time back the question of the purchase of a steam-roller for council needs was before councillors. They decided that a roller should be obtained of local manufacture, and .that; all .deposits s,yhich. .had previously been' received with tenders from a num ber of firms, including one Australian firm, should be returned. The tenders had been before the council for several months, and a controversy rasfed around the question as to whether it should pur chase the local machine or go in for one at a cheaper rate from an importing firm. A letter was received from the Austral Otis Co. (the local tendering firm), requesting a return of the deposit lodged in regard to the tenders. At the same time the company wished to lodge a protest as to the length of time the deposit had been held — nearly five months— and to the manner i...
