ODDS AND ENDS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 27 December 1905

ODDS AND ENDS. A girl wouldrather admit that she was 30 summers old than that she snored. It is a well-known fact 'that the hands of Pad.ereswki are insured for considerable sums against accident. Give a woman a fancy petticoat and a pair of pretty silk' stockings, and she doesn't care how hard the wind blows. It is human nature for a man to look out for number one; but the enterprising widow looks out for number two. Tusmaninn Minister for Agricul ture is desirous of leaving no stone unturned to prevent the importa tion of potato disease into this State, and is sending out a procla mation issued here, preventing the importation of second-hand bags and potatoes from outside the Com monwealth, to Victoria and New South 'Wales in the hope they will fall into line. As You Like It. '1 must linvc liberty Wltlml, ns Inruc n dinner us the- wiml, To liltm- nn whom I plens,-.' -' As You Lllsu 11.' (Act II., sc. V). An enterprising man in a ? nor thern town was assisted. by a turn in Fortune's wheel the other day. He had setrhis heart on starling a three-horse van on the roads and hanging out his shingle as a care ful and experienced carrier. l!y dint of saving and judicious in vestment he had become possessed of horses' enough and had given an order for a coach, trusting to luck when the day came to take dc Hvi'i'v. AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE EARLY DAYS. CHAPTER V.-Continued. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 27 December 1905

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. TIECIE ZE-AJR/ZLTZ' ZD.A_'3Z'S. ? By CHARLES WHITE. Chapter V. — Continued. The bushrangers wero seated round a log fire, a couple of them being engaged in casting bullets for future use, while their horses were tethered some distance away. Quickly dismounting, Mr. Day and several of his men made a rush tp seize the gang before they could re cover from their surprise ; but Day incautiously raised a cheer as he ran, and at once the bushrangers seized their guns and rushed to cover behind the nearest trees. A brisk fusillade commenced. The Jew fired twice at Day, and Ruggy at- one of his companions; but fright had made their hands un steady, and the bullets did not take effect. Day returned the fire and wounded Davis 'in the shoulder ; then he rushed at him, -wishing to take him alive, and after a short struggle overpowered him. Ruggy was also seized when ho had ex hausted his fire, and four others of the gang threw down their amis and surrendered. The seventh ...

Parochialism v, Federation. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 27 December 1905

Parochialism v, Federation. The Federal Pavliament was pro roguccl on Thursday and as far as the work it was doing it might just as well have disbanded two months ago. This much time has been taken up with a long and acrimonious discussion on the 'gag' proposals which were eventually agreed to and included among the Standing Orders oi the House. Then the latter days of the session were devoted to a discussion on the Seat of Government Bill which opened up once more the whole controversy on the merits of the several sites nominated for the Capital Stakes. It will be remem bered that some time ago a similar measure was passed, and, after an exhaustive ballot, Dalgety chosen as the spot for ? the capital of the Commonwealth. It was naturally supposed that having got so far with the business nothing remained but to go on until the necessary buildings were erected and mem bers comfortably settled in their new quarters. The new bill pro vides for the acquiring of 900 square miles and the ...
