The Farmer's Column. THE OIL TEST FOR MILK. [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 17 February 1888

The Farmer's Column. THE OIL TEST FOB, MILK. It has been bat a shog; time since the oil teat of the value of milk was adopted as the ouly correct method of determining the amount of batter in milk, and thoogo experts were sanguine that they ha'l at last found an easy and ready means of detecting' adulterated milk, recent experiments on behalf of the Wisconsin Dairymen's Association hive demonstrated that the oil test does not give a correct measurement of the batter fat in milk. It was found that the oil of the same cow or herd seemed disposed to self-einnlifiication on some some days more than on others, and took up water or whey in some cases, so that a 4-poand cow seemed to become a 6-pound cow in production. Two inches of butter oil would expand to three inches from the amount of water it contained, yet gate no sign t-o the eye. that it contained a drop of water. There was apparently more butter f&tin the measuring tubes that a sample of gathered cream makes, as the oil ...

"No Landlords, You Fools." [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 17 February 1888

l£o Landlords, ¥oa In the year of our Lord, 177.5, says the Lithgow Enterprise, one Thomas SpeDcer, schoolmaster, of Newcastle on-Tyne, delivered the following re markable address in that town. It is a clear statement of the truth of Land Nationalisation. It shows the litter tyranny and injustice of Landlordism, although failing to show how resump tion may be justly and peaceably effected: * That property in land among men in a state of nature ought to be equal, few, one would be fain to hope, would be foolish enough to deny. Therefore, taking this to be granted, the country of any people, in a native state, is properly Iheir common, in which each of them has an equal property with free liberty to sustain himself and family with the animals, fruits, and other products thereof. For upon what must they live if not upon the productions of the conntry in which they reside ? Surely to deny them that right is in [ effect to deny them a rjgbt. to live- The I right to deprive anything bf th...

HARES AND RABBITS IN AMERICA. [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 24 February 1888

HAEES AND BABBITS IN AMERICA. In Manitoba and the North West there are three or four species of hare, including a few Jack rabbits in the Rockies (says a Canadian paper) One is the bush hare common to the old1 provinces, and which, like the polar hare, turns white in the winter. Another is the prairie hare and the polar hare. The common grey hare which Professor Sell thinks is an American species working; its way eastward, is the one which is afflicted with a mysterious disease every seven years, and after becoming remarkably numerous is thus thinned out almost to decimation. According to some this disease is the larvae of a bot or bug, which barrows into the skin in the full and developes in the spring till it kills the animal. Others say the disease is occasioned by the food theyeat;that when they have become so numerous theirfood gets scarce and they are driven to eat the bark of the wild willow, whieh sets up an inflammation in the throat and proves fatal. It might be important ...

Broken Mill. [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 24 February 1888

Broken Mill. [BR CONSTANT TFTAFELLEK.] Alter an absence from the Barrier of nearly six tfeeks a marked advance ment was noticeable, in the shape of new structures. I1 wo new churches and an hotel, principely of wood and iron, being conspicuous and form important features in the architectural appearance of the place. There is still any amount of room for houses of accommo<?ation(not drink I ing shops) for travellers. New comers [ have to take pot luck in the shape, of a . night's lodging, in many instances at the so-called leading . Hotels where drawing rooms are disarranged, by heaping chairs upon tables and pladng stretchers and sofas in every corner of the room, with the only assurance if you grumble that many are thankful to get that much. There is ample room for two or three Temperance Hotels on a large scale. Mining is generally the all absorb ing topic, but I regret that one of our leading papers should cater to a taste for pugilism. In a drunken row one occasionall...

District News. Caltowie. February 23. [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 24 February 1888

District News. Caltowie. February 23* Oar cricketers were again beaten on Saturday last the Laura club putting them through by forty runs although it is to belaid that theLaura's umpire was not up to the mark and gave two of our team out very unfairly and of course caused dissatisfaction as the local team had a good show of winning. Harvest thanksgiving services were conduced in the Wesleyan Church (by the Rev W B Mather of Laura). on Sunday last.In the afternoon a children's services was held which was largely attended, but in the evening the chapel was crowded many being unable to obtain sitting room. Yesterday the usual social was held which also was largely attended, over £7 being taken at the door. Songs and Recitations were given during the evening, and and the whole wound up with a fruit sale. Yesterday 22nd, the Gladstone cricketers came here to try conclusions with our team but this time the Caltowie's were too good for them, beat ing them by three runs. The principal scorer...
