Hanucah in Olden Times. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

Hanucah in Olden Times. There were three elements in joy, each of which had a local habitation of its own ; in the synagogue, 'in the public hall, and in the home. The ' Rejoicing of the Law ' was a Synagogue function, Purim filled the streets and the Com munal Hall, Hanucah held the home as its peculiar scene. Naturally the feast of Han ucah had distinguishing traits, but the the pre valence of illumination at other times helped to spur the midiseval Jews to give the Hanucah lights a sprcial prestige. At an earlier period the illuminations were public ^not merely the illumination in synagogue, which has remained a never interrupted rite. But in the Middle Ages, when Jews lived in special quarters of the town, the lamps were often set ; outside the doors or at the windows. As early as the 12th century goldsmiths applied their art to the con struction of ornate Hanucah lamps, with eight upright stems or branches, with another stem to bear the ' Shamas ' p^ attendant light. It may be ...

No title [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

The Rev. A. B. Davis on Sunday last put all dgujbts at rest in connection with his retaining the position of Chief Minister of the Sydney Hebrew Congregation. Rumors had been circulated that he intended resigning on reaching his 7,0th birthday. Therefore it was very pleasing to hear the reverend gentleman most emphatically deny any such assertion in responding to a vote of thanks. for presiding at the meeting of the Sydney Jewish Education Board. Last Bosh Hoshanah and Tom Kippur we had occasion to note the hearty manner in which he carried out the services, and the streugth with which he was upheld was truly wonderful. The Community could ill-afford the loss of such a respected leader, and one so well beloved by young and old alike. We may wish for him the full strength and vigor to [uphold the dignity of the Sydney Hebrew Congregation for many years. [Formerly the celebration of Xmas tide was a thing in which a Jew took no part. It was a season which had no particular significance...

The Klondyke Region. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

\\\q Klondy^e Region. An American scientist describes the region of the newly found gold- fields as follows: — ? The conditions of life are almost inconceivable to those who have not paid especial attention to them. At repeated places along the middle Yukon ice takes the place of ordinary rock. Bluffs a) one: the river' on whose surface forests were growing appear on close approach to be precipitous walls, of stagnant ice covered with a small amount of soil and a. deep carpet of moss. Anywhere on the surface one had but to dig down a few inches to find solid ice. Indeed, the ground never thaws there to a depth of more than a few inches. The placer mining will have to be in frozen soil, except on the margin of the large streams. But the rich places are on the small streams from thirty to one hundred miles back from the Yukon. The region is a; regular rat-trap. Up to the middle of September parties can without much trouble get over the Chilcoot Pass with a small amount of equipment, a...

COOKING TONGUES. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

COOKING TONGUES, Something that every Housekeeper Does not Know Every good housekeeper knows how to soak and boil a smoked beef tongue, but a great many cooks treat a fresh tongue in such a manner that it becomes as flavorless as gelatine. Properly roasted or braised in stock, a fresh beef or calf's tongue is a delicious meat. It is not remarkable for its nutritous qualities, but, like the tender loin of beef, the meat is of good flavour if it is carefully cooked anu seasuneu, ana it is always or melting tenderness Select a fresh beef tongue for roasting. Wash and trim it throughly, and season it with salt and pepper. Wrap a paste around it made of a pint of flour and a cupful of water. Roll out this paste thin and wrap it around the tongue. Lay it on a meat rack in a dripping pan, with a pint of boiling water. Roast it for about two hours. Keep the surface of the paste from drying too hard or from burning by basting it with the boiling water in the bottom of the dripping pan. At th...

Hanucah. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

Hanucalj. Formerly women made holiday on the Feast of Light, some for eight days, some— who regarded a week's holiday as an unpardonable excess — only rested on the first and the last days of the feast, but all ceased their usual occupations at eventide, while the lights were huminc. 'In Venice the Jews would embark on gondolas and tow through their district, greeting each illuminated house with a benediction and a merry Hebrew chorus. Venice and its bridges were an eternal source both of ,'tun and of ttial. Kor the ' Cohanim ' were placed in a, sorry plight when a death occurred. The bridges joined the whole Jewish quarter, and it was held by many that the presence of a corpse- in any one house ?*' defiled all houses. Hence the ' priests '' were forced to pass many a night in the open air, in snow or rain spanning Venice with a dolorous ' Bridge of Sighs.' But it early became the rule to reserve the Hanucah lights for the interior of the house. We can easily see that an external la...
