AN IMPROMPTU. DAY versus NIGHT. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen’s Land Advertiser — 14 May 1824

AN IMPROMPTU. DAY versus NIGHT. Let others darkly sing of Night, When clouds enrobe the deep ;r "* And glow-worms with devotive light Among the, woodbines creep :. But, O ! be mine the blander task Of eulogizing Day, When youth and love united, bask In beauty's origin ray ! By Night, ambrosial dews may fall To slake the droughtful rose ; On heaven penitence may call, And innocence, repose : But, Day restores to manhood's heart The,flush of active joy ! A proof supreme, our pleasure's art Is furnished by EMPLOY. E.H. T.

To the Editor of the Hobart Town Gazet[?] Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land, May 12th, 1824. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen’s Land Advertiser — 14 May 1824

I To the Editor of the Hobart Town Gazeh, Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land, May 12th, 1824. SIR,-I cannot help expressing my sur- prise at Mr. Thomson's renewing the tender subject of the fi. fa., and, more,,particularly 'at his petulant attack ,upon yourself. ,t I trust the following will' explain the cause : what will the Public say, when they find Mi. Thomson sent two Gentlemen of high respectability to exert their influence with me, m order- to prevent Mr. Bentley's affidavit appearing in the Hobart Town Gazette ? Mr. Thomson, finding I was de tei mined to send it forth to the Public, prepared c, paiagraph, apd for the pur- pose of doing away(t¡herdireful effectMr. Bentley's allidavit 'might'have* on" their minds, he most ingeuiously dated it as far back as the twenty-sixth day of April last. To the Editor of the Hobart Town Gazette. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen’s Land Advertiser — 14 May 1824

To the Editor ¿f the Hobart Town Gazette. Mr. EDITOR,-Perhaps Mr. Thomson may think it as unnecessary for me to make any obseivàtion at the present time, as he did on a former occasion., I must however beg leave again to differ with him.-:It could scarcely be thought, Mr. Editor, " Mr. Thomson and myself having met upon this'matter, and a' full explanation then taking place,' shewing that'Gentleman to have been mistaken, as he then acknow- ledged," that the statement, which ap- peared in your last week's Gazette, should afteiwards have been« put forth, without noticing in the least the explanation that had passed between us ; I confess it has given me' no little surprise, as it also leaves me no alternative but to state as publicly '" that I never made any pi omise to ad- vance any funds Whatever for Mr. Thom- son." 1 For the future, that Gentleman must en- deavour to brighten his very defective memory, without the assistance of Mr. Editor, > . THE POST OFFICE. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen’s Land Advertiser — 14 May 1824

THE POST OFFICE.     Notwithstanding that, with quenchless zeal, Mr. Britton, the far-famed antiqua- rian, explores the nearly perished vaults of his own nation's superannuated chapels, convents, and cathedrals; whilst the Egyp- tian pyramids and Athenian vestibules   engage the admiration of his learned Fel- lows. I cannot avoid considering the Post Office, in Murray-street, however simple its design, and imperfect its proportions, as far more worthily instructive, than all the half corroded granite, marble, or other   objects of their research. For there, when   a ship from England has discharged her mail bag, I have witnessed nearly all the varieties of human expectation! It may   not afford material for a lecture on the po- licy of Apostate Julian, or a critique on the vanity of Adrian - but there, the theatre of present life, with all its motley characters and scenes - with all its bye play cues and b...

REFINED SENSIBILITY. (ORIGINAL.) [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen’s Land Advertiser — 14 May 1824

REFINED SENSIBILITY. (ORIGINAL.) Once on a time in this fair clime, There dwell a maid so feeling: She could not hear without a tear, Soft music's tender pealing. It chanced ond day as tatlers say,   When guests were with her many,   She weeping sighed, and faintly cried, John, give that man a penny ! And tell him pray no more to play,   It makes me so dejected,   When music's play'd, sobbed out the maid, I'm always thus affected !   John bowed his head, and smiling said,   As quick as flies the arrow ; Ma'am what you hear 'tis very clear Is nothing but a barrow ! But if you please, I'll go and grease The wheel that shrieks so badly, The man I'm sure will like the cure, And let me do it gladly !   Launceston, May 10, ,1824.

AN ESSAY ON EDUCATION. "Exemplo plus quam ratione vivimus." [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen’s Land Advertiser — 21 May 1824

ÀNJÊSSAY ON EDUCATION, " Eximplo plus quam rationé vivimus." i WHENEVER* the chequered propensities of human intellect and feeling are consi- dered, their varied results compared, and the impetus' or resistance which they ex- perience from instruction is displayed, no one, who possesses reason, will oppose the necessity of obeying Jerusalem's wise King, ( whose positive command to every guardian is, » Train up a child in the way he should go,? so thatwhen a man, he may not wan- der from it. TO CORRESPONDENTS. We would not withhold Mr. Thomson's fur- ther Communication, did it convey fresh matter; as it is, we trust that Gentleman will be satisfied, that the Public cannot be interested in the protraction of his cor-   respondence with the Provost Marshal.   We think the "Lady in Van Diemen's Land" does not employ her time very   profitably in the consideration of such     subjects as that in the lines transmit-     ted by W.
