gIndatdra & xqea & t tandaid NEU TMPrr5i NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1909.. JUST now there seems to be every like lihood of a campaign being initiated in favor ot electoral reform. The recent State elections have opened the eyes of a goodly section of the com munity to thi urgent need of some steps being taken to ensure a. fair re presentation of the wishes of the peo ple. TIn the past we have witnessed the Government of the country resting in the hands of ia minority instead of a majority. The people have not registered their votes in anything like the public spirited manner that they should. Yet, when all is said and done, the chief fault is with our system of polling and the manner in which the rolls are compiled. At the last elections it was decided to use the old rolls, and at one blow some 70,000 people were prohihited from voting. .Another thing is, the abolition of the plural vote. It is not fair to the average citizen that a man possessing property in, ...

About West AustralIa, AN INTEREStING INTERVIEW W1TB MR. A. DUNN. Some time ago we announced the departure of the above gentleman for Western Australia in search of land. After an absence of several weeks, Mr Dunn returned to Alexandra, and is now preparing to leave the place of his birth for the sister State, where, like many other Victorians, he has been forced to make his home. In the course of a pleasant interview, the following interest ing matter has been culled and will, no doubt, be read with interest by those who know Mr Dunn, and his many friends all of whom regret his departure: What were your first impressions of West Australia ?-Well, my first impres sions were decidedly unfavorable, both from an agricultural and grazing uoint of view. But, as I had gone over to look for land I felt determined on going farther afield. So, in due course, took train for Wagin, a point farther south; the distance from Fremantle being 205 miles along the Great Sootlhern Railway, and the jour...

Cattle Stealing. ARREST OF THE THIEVES. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 February 1909

Cattle Stealing. ARREST OF THE THIEVES. What has the appearance of a daring raid on cattle, happened a few days ago. at Thornton. From what we can gather, it appears Mr R. V. Wightman, J. P., of Thornton, missed between 30 and 40 he'id of cattle from his Swamp Creek paddock and that it was by the merest chance that the discovery was made in time. Mr Brooks. of Alexandra, in accordance with arrangementa made, proceeded with several cattle to this identical Swamp Creek paddock. On arriving at the home. stead, Mr Brooks was accompanied by one of the Wightman's, who thought a look round at his own stock would not be out of place. Arriving at the paddock search was made for the cattle, but not a hoof could he found. No time was l4st in making the fact known and informing the Marysville police, Mr C. Wightman in the meantime following up the trail. Constable Deeley and Morley left immediatoly and on arrival at lIealsville ascertained that two men were seen driving a mob in the direction o...
